With Kev Boy on some of those.
Traffic is definately a Bbm/A#m.
The other thing that struck me is your BPMs. What are you using to find them as some of them seem way off?
Cheers

I know the bpms are some off...but I don't remember what did I use...
some of them may be pure guesses some of them are from various counters...

Starsailor - 4 2 the Floor (C#m/D flat m)

does ANYONE know the key to Fire and Ice - Forever Young? I've been killin myself trying to find a tune that builds up to it for that ultimate finish but can't seem to find any.
My only guess is Cosmic Gate - Fire Wire which Judge Jules played before at the Gatecrasher SSS in 2001. Other than that I'm stumped. It's really hard to mix into. |

thanks qualia.
i have figured out more about music theory in this thread then i ever did in 3 years of taking piano lessons. its actually got me more interested in picking up my bass and keyboard again.
Some Additional Questions:
1- What about Major Keys?
I feel like we talk a lot about minor keys here and I understand that most EDM is in minor, but a lot of my tracks right now are in major keys.
What can I mix a track that is in a major key with?
If I have a track in 7A, I cant go to 8B?
How do I transistion from a minor key to a major one?
2- What the heck does "-" mean?
Some tracks listed on mixshare have a - next to the key. How does that effect what I can mix it with?
3- General rule is you can go up or down one in camelot or up 4 or down 3?
Is this how I should start practicing my harmonic mixing? Generally speaking.
The major keys are what is throwing me off right now. I am spinning live for the second time on saturday and am hoping to have all of my tracks in my bag keyed by then, although a lot of my newer ones I can not find keys for. A lot of tracks in my current rotation are in major keys. |

cosmokid-
1) major keys are pretty much the same as minor keys, in that they are compatible with the relative 4th, 5th and minor. 7A is technically compatible with 6A, 8A and 7B. however, you might be able to get away with 7A-8B depending on the songs...
to transition from major to minor you must use the relative major/minor. i.e. each major has a minor which essentially shares the same notes. on the keyboard, this minor is 3 half steps below the root note of the major key
2) i'm not sure where you're seeing the '-' character... it might denote a key off the main pitch, i.e. Am-20 (as in 20 cents below Am). if you can describe where you're seeing it exactly that'd help (if it's a question specific to mixshare i'd prefer you post about it on that site)
3) general rule in Camelet is to go up or down one number. if you understand the theory, you'll realize this corresponds to going up or down the circle of fifths. on a keyboard, this means choosing a key either 7 half steps above or below the root note.
hope this helps! |

Another question...
I understand the +4 - 3 concept, but if I am playing a track in 12A, can I go to +4 = 4A for the next track? Or do I need to go down again?
So is 12 the ceiling? Then I work down? |

4 actually effectively becomes 16 if you get what I mean so you can in effect keep on going and going with nothing to stop you.
Cheers

PS
Didn't have time to read question so I hope I haven't jumped in and given you some bad information. |

nem is right it all repeats going up and down, after 12 it repeats again at the lowest number... (remember 12B would be compatible with 1B)
that said, i personally don't think the +/- 4 jumps work. i mean, depending on the songs obviously they might sound good together, but i think it only works on music that's not veering far from the root note. if the songs utilized all the notes of the keys they were in, there would be a lot of clashing--IMHO ;-)
then again, i don't spin trance, hehe... |
