The tasering was unnecessary, and the officers likely knew that.
I bet they just wanted to punish him for being an ass, but punching him in the face wouldn't have been seen as "acceptable," so he got shocked instead. |

I absolutely cannot believe the number of soggy-s in this thread turning a mole hill into a mountain. s sake people - the kid was an idiot, acted as such, and was handled in the same fashion: what's not to get? |
Coming from someone who has many times claimed to be an ass to people on this forum, I find your conclusion rather short-sighted. You are mouthy, judgmental and generally have a attitude towards others here; I like you a lot Rob, because of your self-awareness of these sorts of things and am rather disappointed you seem to be taking the side of people who pride themselves in "fixing" outspoken members of society.
| quote: | | All of you are acting as if the first amendment has been on here, and that all of a sudden we're in this police state where no one can speak their mind without getting tasered - and frankly, I think you're all ing crazy. |
I have noticed that the only people who seem to be mentioning the first amendment and the constitution and whatnot are the people who think this man was simply a moron who got what he deserved and that the integrity of the bill of rights and whatnot has been upheld. Maybe some of you don't realize that the Constitution is really just one, big, 200 year-old joke anymore? Don't subscribe and hide behind those "rights" which are subtly encroached - they will fail you.

He was just trying to make a point. I don't think a lot of you got that it wasn't about sacrificing yourself for civil liberties - because that is not the issue here. Rather, Voltaire wanted to illustrate that every man should have a right to say what is on his mind, especially when people do not want to hear about it. People, in this respect, are free to listen or not, should they please, but are ultimately responsible for their interpretation; with this in mind, it is rarely a demagogue's fault for inciting a riot - it is the people's responsibility for their own freedom. |

If you're really content comparing a public internet forum to the event in which this kid chose to cause a scene, that's fine with me - but you'd be wrong, and the analogy is flawed on so many levels it hurts.
Also, I'd love for you to point me to where I say anything remotely like "People with dissenting opinions should be 'fixed.'" All I've said in this thread is that the kid got exactly what he deserved - nothing more.
And further, Voltaire was referring to the right to hold and advocate positions opposing majority rule - he was not saying "Hey, if you feel like going to a privately organized debate or forum and feel like acting like a giant , you should be allowed to." If you really feel like contorting his words to fit your bleeding heart, that's fine - but again, you're wrong.
At the end of the day this was NOT, as so many of you seem to think, some public square where people are allowed to do whatever they choose. Some of you need to do your homework before spouting off such shortsighted and reactionary nonsense.
This is the epitome of a faux-intellectual, overly PC, media-driven debate in which so few people actually know the facts before they open their mouths, it hurts. |
