EITHER HARPER DOES THE RIGHT THING AND ACCEPTS DIONS REQUEST OR HE ASKS FOR A PROROUGE OR TO DISOLVE PARLIAMENT. OR OTHER
THEN EITHER THE GOVERNOR GENERAL TAKES DIONS ADVICE AND DISCARDS HARPERS REQUEST FOR AN ELECTION OR PROROUGE, OR SHE ALLOW AN ELECTION OR PROROUGE TO TAKE PLACE.
I DON'T SEE HOW SHE CAN POSSIBLY SEE A TWO MONTH PROROUGE IS PRUDENT. ALSO AN ELECTION SO SOON AFTER THE LAST AND THE THIRD SUCH SEEMS A FOOLISH WASTE OF TAX PAYER DOLLARS. EACH ELECTION CAN COST UP TO LIKE $250 MILLION, AND THIS IS WHEN CANADA IS RUNNING A DEFICIT.
HOW DO THEY EXPECT TO GOVERN WHILE CAMPAIGNING, IN THE MIDST OF CHANGES SUCH AS THE US PRESIDENTIAL HANDOVER AND ALL THIS ECONOMIC STUFF. |

bad governance? his new government has only been in power for less than 8 weeks!!! he has barely had a chance to do anything... |
It doesn't matter if he was governing for just a day...people have it in their minds that he's a horrible leader and can't do anything right and should be put out of office.

Canada was stunned Monday when it was announced that The Stanley Cup will be awarded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, possibly as early as December 6th.
The cup will be stripped from from 2008 playoff champions the Detroit Red Wings and be awarded to the Leafs, who didn't even make the playoffs.
How is this possible, Canadians ask?
Well, the Leafs have formed a coalition with eastern conference semifinalists the Montreal Canadians, and conference quarter finalists the Ottawa Senators, now outnumbering the Red Wings.
According to current Leaf coach Ron Wilson "the Red Wings have lost the confidence of the league and should hand the cup over immediately to our coalition".
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is cutting short a European trip to try to resolve the unprecedented hockey crisis that could force a second playoff series, or see an opposing team coalition take the cup. |

now there are rumblings within Liberal caucus that some members are against the coalition, incl Ignatieff. or at least being encouraged to distance himself from the coalition.
wonder if the breach will be big enough and some Lib MPs jump ship |

Did we not vote for Harper not more than 8 weeks ago. |
No, we voted for 308 members of parliament, they allowed Harper to form a government. Now the majority of them would like to form another government. UNDERSTAND THIS PEOPLE; YOU DO NOT VOTE FOR THE PRIME MINISTER, YOU VOTE FOR AN MP, MPs CHOOSE THE GOVERNMENT.

No, the MPs are still in place... again, you vote for an MP not a government.

No, our constitution gives the power of electing representatives to the people and the power of governing to those representatives. This is an indirect, representational, constitutional monarchy. |

I agree with you completely Chem Enhanced, sorry I don't know your real name. But there is a term I can't remember it now (I've been out of Uni for about 3-4 years) where an MP must support the general direction of the party or rish being kicked out of the party altogether. I beleive the term is political soverignty. But the simple fact is during an election people for the most part vote for a party based on the direction the party's leader. Yes we are geographically divided by ridings but seldom do Canadians even know who their MP is and what their individual agenda for that riding is after the election is over. |
It's called party discipline. While people may vote based on who they believe their representative will support to form the government this is not the same as voting for a government. If people do not understand this (worse yet don't know their MP) they they really have no business voting to begin with (FYI, I'm an advocate for a meritocracy rather then a democracy). |

I get what you are saying. The reality is that people vote for a party with the intent that their MP gets elected and more MPs of that party get elected than in any other party.
Say what you want about the MPs still being in place, but the reality of the system is that people vote for a specific party to be in power. And that is the intention, given how the leaders themselves are the focus of the debates and the focus of the advertisements, while the MPs are basically an after thought. |

Thats it party discipline!!! Thank you. Unfortunatly people can vote even if they have absolutely no idea how the system works. But it is their right and it is right that must be defended. This really does underline what I said earlier that there is going to be a cry for reform. |

what's funny is that there are people in here who even though claiming to know the political system here, keep spewing about how people voted for harper, how the coalition attempt is an attack on democracy... regardless of actually knowing the difference.
people who don't understand our system are stupid for the obvious reasons... but the people trying to perpetuate the myths and harvest the stupidity for their own gains, to me that is 10x worse.
I'm not a Dion or Layton fan by any means... Duceppe is his own brand of crazy... but what they are doing is allowed under this political system, is not treason/anti-democracy... you really need to stop trying to mislead the sheep with this bull.
Also, because it hasn't been said enough yet:
SOCIALISTS!!!
SEPARATISTS!!!
ATTACK ON DEMOCRACY!!! |
