I wouldn't even mind the gov investing in Toyota or Honda, since they actually make sensible decisions on planning and production. It would make much more sense for us to help grow viable businesses, instead of failed ones. Just sell the GM/Ford plants to Honda/Toyota, help them retool, and get all those workers new business cards.

Honestly RJ, you're smarter then this. You know full well that this plant began construction well over a year ago and has been producing vehicle since before the September downturn in the market. Moreover; you know full well that a company would not simply mothball a project of this magnitude after such a heavy initial upfront investment... unless they actually went up. The fact that the official opening was today is not an indicator of economic strength.

Note... I'm not saying that the sky is falling; however, using this story as evidence that everything is fine is misleading.

While the plant just opened today, Toyota announced awhile ago that because of the downturn in the north american market it's halting production for 2 days later this month.

I expect that "helping them retool" would cost a fcktonne more than just building new capacity from scratch. Not even private equity vultures are going near the big 3. the only player that is going to step in at this point is the government, because they've been guilt tripped into it.

Such a debacle. Let them die. They will never, ever be competitive and loans/bailouts are just prolonging the inevitable at a huge cost to the taxpayers.

Toyota sales went down -34% in novembre in the usa... everyone in the industry is taking the hit.

No, we voted for 308 members of parliament, they allowed Harper to form a government. Now the majority of them would like to form another government. UNDERSTAND THIS PEOPLE; YOU DO NOT VOTE FOR THE PRIME MINISTER, YOU VOTE FOR AN MP, MPs CHOOSE THE GOVERNMENT.

Yes, as many people have told you they understand this. De jure this is how it is suppose to work, de facto it doesn't work that way. Secondly, if they members actually talked and discussed this with their constituants then maybe I would accept this, but they don't. They follow the party line because of party discipline.

A poll that was released late today was very interesting and has can change how this plays itself out. You should be able to get all the numbers from Ipsos tomorrow morning. Before anyone says its just a poll think about it...they have been almost perfect in their predictions over the last number of years.

68% of the people agreed with peroging the parliment until the end of January, start or February.
If Harper was voted down I think the number was 57% would prefer an election instead of the coalition government.
If an election was held the Conservatives would get 46% of the vote which would give them a huge majority.

What I get from this.
1. While people want help for the economy and want some kind of stimulus package they don't want our government jumping in and wasting our money. The public also would have supported changing the party funding, and the limitations to strikes with the public service.
2. The people hate Dion more than even during the election
3. The coalition will not last past next week. While Harper made some stupid mistakes the Liberals made a bigger mistake getting in bed with pornstache and Duceppe
4. The 3 Liberal leadership candidates just made themselves irrelevant if another strong candidate (John Mannly) who opposed the coalition enters the race. They will also be hurt during an election when the Conservatives (hopefully Harper won't be around) point out they supported the coalition.
5. Ignatiaff will be the first to try and distance himself from the coalition, but the damage is done.
6. Harper will have to play nice until the budget gets passed but he will be able to do what he pleases again since there will be no chance of another coalition being formed.

Interesting times indeed.

46% of the vote != majority (necessarily)

it might be likely, but would depend on how that was distributed across the ridings.

agreed on your points, except #3 and #6 (possible, but I wouldn't put money on them, either way).

1. Dion needs to go and he needs to go now.

2. If Harper ever gets a majority I am truly affraid for Canada.
