my bet:
-budget full of goodies for the people in january
-opposition votes it down
-election for beginning of March on the budget full of goodies, with Dion still at the head of the Liberals.
Harper is laughing. |

yep.
I can also see some centre left and centre right Libs crossing the line to cons, dissenting over this alliance with NDP. Too far left for their ideological tastes |

The Liberals must get their together and have their convention mid january and elect a new leader... or else they will loose more time with a lame duck. |

I am sure the liberals will have a new leader before another election. They have to distance themselves as far as the can from Dion and this Coalition.
If they don't then I see Harper getting a majority next time around. |

While this is a distinct possibility I don't think it will play out this way. The pirogueing of parliament was a great move for all sides, as it gives a chance for each to back away gracefully. The conservatives are going to come back with a budget that will be palatable to the Libs and NDP, which will give the opposition a legit way of backing down without looking like they were scared off at the thought of an election. There are already cracks in the Liberal party over this... it's just as likely that a large proportion of the Lib caucus would flip the bitch on Dion as support him. My guess is that we'll see more cooperation between the parties in the winter 09 session.
Alternatively... If the Libs and NDP are determined to oust the conservatives then they will do so by rejecting the throne speech rather then waiting for the budget (remember the throne speech opens parliament, the budget cannot be read until the throne speech is voted on). By voting against the throne speech the government would loose the confidence of the house and there would be a new government or an election. This would be the only reasonable move for the Libs/NDP if they still wanted to bring the Cons down in January, as waiting for the budget would make the election on the budget rather then the Cons approach to governance... and as you point out the budget is likely to be full of goodies that a large majority of the electorate would support. |

Won't happen... all the official candidates would need to agree to this change in order for it to be allowed under the Lib party constitution... I imagine the probability that anyone but the front runner (Iggy) would accept a shorter campaign is exceedingly low as shorter campaigns favor the front runner. |

Whoa, somebody just came out of the closet. :D :tongue2
I really hope this break lets each side calm the down, and let the house get back to governing.
Watching the question period in the House yesterday was just embarrassing. 'Boo, ahhhh, hissss, boooo'. What the would happen if you stood up in your 3rd grade class and started acting like that? They need a serious take your kid to work day. |

Parliament is the biggest group of drama queens I have ever seen next to gay pride - it's embarrassing, but then I figure that's just politics, and it happens everywhere. |
