What programs are these? I haven't run into anything like that except Speedfan and CPUZ, but that's because they're non-installable .exes.

Any program on a network share will come up each time. Even happens on XP, annoying as hell. There are lots of utilities i use, that are single EXEs, that i keep on a network drive with all my other . Even zip files, and the like.

Again, if you turn UAC off, what will break? I am thinking of just turing it off, and seeing what happens. I am smart enough to monitor on my own if i want to run something or not.

i've had UAC off on vista for about a year and have had no issues in terms of malware/spyware.

windows defender adn the likes function normally and its all fine

In Win7 they've tried to extend the UAC functions and instead of making people more accepting of it, theyve made people (such as myself) hate it even more.

if you're gonna let us customize UAC, we should be allowed to do so freely instead of having a Mac OS like slider with only 4 fixed packages

So I just signed up for a "Windows 7 Install Fest" being held by MS at their Mississauga headquarters. You go with your comp, and install it under the watch of MS, and with some tech help of course. I am going on behalf of my company. Should be interesting.

How was it?

every now and then it starts flickering as i scroll on web pages or move windows around... (i guess it will be fixed in the final release)

What's with all the UAC hate? I like knowing that I can run some dodgy-looking program and be alerted before it's able to do any real damage. Not that I often do, but it makes life easier.

Is it really so hard to click 3 times instead of twice?

That's a negative. As soon as they give users the ability to customize that way, it means that a program can worm its way into the same screen or API. You might as well throw out UAC entirely with such a gigantic security hole.

Finally decided to throw Vista out the Window and I'd have to say, I'm pretty impressed with 7.

VERY impressed.

That's the whole point of UAC. If a program tries to install itself, run, make changes to the system registry folders, etc, UAC will pop up asking you if you want to allow it. If you didn't do this yourself then you know somethings up and then you won't allow it. It's a safe guard. It goes way deeper than that, but that's just one reason to have it on.

I had UAC completely disabled in my previous Vista install.. Honestly, now that I've re-enabled it and brought it down just a touch it isn't that much of an annoyance.

It took me 30 minutes to install this on my notebook - Booted up with NO problems whatsoever. Connected to Windows Update and downloaded the few drivers that were needed, and boom. Ready to rock.

Windows 7 looks to be what Vista should have been - All these little UI tweaks are cool AND functional (Download Progress Gradient IN THE TASKBAR? right off I LOVE IT) and the usability thus far is just tops. ing five stars!

Curious to see how this holds up after I start jamming it full of apps and other grey area (Live 8 Anyone?). Until then, I'm sold. Will be upgrading the second this goes RTM.

Here's a cool Win7 tip for a quick way to control window size and position:

Use the Windows Key (left side around CTRL and ALT) plus the arrow pad (up/down/left/right) to set window position.

Looking forward to getting my copy tomorrow! Hopefully being at Microsoft, I hope they can help me get my driver issues sorted. Funny how the Vista drivers worked for Win7 for everything (video, sound, etc...) but not LAN. Crossing my fingers....
