It's a pretty good OS though. I've got a Hackintoshed version on my PC that works 100% flawlessly, and I turned my printer on for the first time in months last week and it just worked... I didn't have to do a damn thing to it. Mind you, it's certainly not like that for everything, but that was something I wish Windows would do.

Switched from PC to mac...

Always been a PC user for many years. I worked around and with computers for years.

I must say I doubt I'll be going back to PC anytime soon...

I like the OS but I'll be damned if I'll ever spend money on their hardware. Ever.

Sometimes I say the same thing, but then I remember why I generally don't want that. Because then it leads to complacency.

Also, Vista prepared people to know that their piece of old hardware is NOT going to be supported forever. Windows 7 does a MUCH better job at finding drivers for devices. In fact, for all the devices that DON'T have a driver built in, only 1 device do I have to muck with, and that is the TV tuner in this PC. All others came from Windows Update automatically. LAN and WIFI were installed from the get go.

To be fair, Conficker.C/downadup spread via a vulnerability in windows directly. No need for browsing to a website. Then again, if people installed updates as they should, the vulnerability would have been patched a long time ago.

There's the updates, and also most people today are behind a bog-standard router or other NAT firewall, so it's very very hard to get passively infected.

If you're behind a firewall, leave UAC turned on, don't visit dodgy web sites (or browse with NoScript), and don't open random e-mail attachments or k3y@3nZ from LimeWire, then chances of getting a virus or worm are extremely close to zero.

IMO, the vast majority of infections today are due to some combination of ignorance and stupidity. Yeah, there are security holes too, but that's the point of defense in depth.

The problem is that everybody does this, and will continue to do so

Don't disagree here at all. Idiots will still click on they shouldn't, and cause problems, no matter the OS they run.

It's getting better. Slowly - very very slowly, but steadily. I had to explain to my mom the other day that yes, she actually did the right thing by closing the popup window that said "YOUR COMUPTER HAS BEEN INFCECTED WITH SPYWARRE CLICK HERE TO CLEAN NOW". There's still a lot of uncertainty and misunderstanding, but I believe that more people are starting to err on the side of caution, even when they are confused.

Newer ideas like IE's Information Bar, UAC, and Vista's improved Windows Update service are definitely the right approach in training: make it easy to do the right (safe) thing, and awkward to do the wrong (dangerous) thing.

Noticed a little bug in Vista, and now Win7. When deleted large files off of USB stick, explorer freezes. So I was just trying to delete 7.5GB of tv shows off of a 8GB card, and it froze up. I have to format the key in order to have an empty key.

The same key, works fine under linux and OSX.

Hmm, I didn't have this problem deleting a 6.5gb ISO image from it. Which build are you running?

LOL I swear MS will never get anything right. I just bought a new hard drive and of course, Windows won't display it in My Computer unless it's properly formatted. Integrating a disk formatting solution would've been too stupid and none of the freeware programs work.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Configure your hard drive in BIOS.

Of course they do! But not only format utilities, partitioning utilities as well.

Start >> Control Panel >> Systems and Security >> Administrative Tools >> Computer Management >> Disk Management (been around since XP, maybe even win2k)

If your drive is configured properly in BIOS, then it will show up there. If it does not, go back to the BIOS.
