*might*

On the topic of non-sequitur, I just received my prizes from DJ Bone's "What Is Music" contest. Included a signed, coloured wax 2 x 12" of SD034 - Music Remixes - 2 jacket patches and an extra 12" produced by Bone's 12-year old kid, Aleckxis Jaina with the flipside featuring producer Rennie Foster's 2 young 'uns, who go by the moniker The Foster Kidz. The Foster Kidz single "Butterscotch" is a pretty jazzy affair, and has some great samples of the kids saying "I like butterscotch!" at the intro.

I'm not really sure what your argument is.

An argument would imply that I'm trying to win something.

Are you claiming that the future is going to be materially tough, or spiritually tough?

I can't lay claim to something that has yet to happen (or not happen).

As mentioned well back in this thread, my primary reason for not wanting to have kids is my feeling that I would probably end up foisting too many of my own unresolved issues upon their impressionable little selves. Knowing the resentment I feel toward my own parents for having done the same to me, I decided it would be wise to not pass on that particular multigenerational legacy, as the last thing the world needs is another emotionally hobbled child who spends a large portion of his adult life trying to strip away layers of unbidden, unconscious conditioning.

But that's just me.

For some reason, several people chose to (often irately) focus on my second reason. Perhaps due to some niggling twinge of guilt at the thought that yes, maybe we as a species (also implying a certain level of individual responsibility) haven't exactly done a cracking job of leaving adequate resources on the planet for generations to follow.

Either way, your future message-board inhabiting offspring won't have to worry about my non-existent ones annoying them like a nagging fibreglass splinter, so all is truly as it should be in the world, give or take a few.

Not necessarily: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/argument

"a process of reasoning; series of reasons"
"a statement, reason, or fact for or against a point"

So an old-fashioned doomsday scenario, then.

I don't recall past famines, economic collapses and other such dilemma that brought misery to a large number of people in a short period of time being referred to as "doomsday scenarios"...but, whatever suits.

I thought the whole idea was that the future is going to be worse than the past?

We have known pockets of history where has been rather jiggy for a large portion of the population. Given that our (as you put it) destructive, consumptive, unsustainable, selfish, nasty and flawed ways have expanded to encompass the planet in an unprecedented manner, to think that we've somehow moved beyond such occurrences, ne're to repeat them again, well...

I know, I know...absurd.

SYSTEM-J
already is rather jiggy for a large portion of the planet. Thankfully you occupy a skewed Western vantage point.

What's really lol (or sad - I get those two mixed up sometimes) is that you and your biololgical impetus don't have a lolling clue as to what you're lolling about.

why is it that you feel the need to edit all your replies to me...how hard, in fact, are you trying?

ps. we should have a polling thread to identify who tries the hardest...I'll admit, I'm sure I occupy a respectable position on that list but it's nice to see new people go bigger and better!
