I don't like either of them, I cheer for Djokovic. However, hearing God Save the Queen during medal ceremonies makes me cringe.

So, I'm assuming from the information you've provided, that you're not British, right? So your previous statements on 'GB' are purely a subjective opinion then?

Good one.

That's unfortunate, as I was almost looking forward to an intelectual discussion on the subject.

No, I'm not British. I'll be the first to admit I harbor some resentment towards the British after the atrocities committed by your great leader Oliver Cromwell towards my people.

That aside, I think it's foolish to have a monarchy, such as Great Britain, which rules over multiple at least semi-sovereign countries, most of which do not want to be part of Great Britain*.

*This is only what I've gathered from speaking with several people from Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Think about it. Do you really think it makes sense to have a "Great Britain" which includes 4 different countries? What good has come of this? Religious conflicts aside, it is one of the key tensions between the Northern Irish and the actual Irish. Although it has obviously lessened over the years, they essentially created a civil war amongst a neighboring country.

So you have a grudge against the British for something that happened about 400 years ago?

I guess that means I should distance myself from my friends in.....

Germany - because Hitler used to do stuff over there, that wasn't particularly agreeable with the Jewish community?

Japan - because they invaded Pearl Harbour, killing thousands of British Allies?

Libya - because they once fell under the Muammar Gaddafi regime?

Iraq - Because Saddam did some mad ?

Italy - because of Benito Mussolini, I mean he was quite bad, right?

..... and that's all I can think right now, over the past century, never mind the past 400 years.

Your unjustified 'resentment' is ing sickening, in my opinion. If the British can get over it and realise that together, in Europe or otherwise we are stronger, why can't you?

Anyway, this is slightly off topic, so feel free to make a separate thread if you deem necessary.

This was edited after I posted my comment, so I didn't see it before posting mine, but to be fair, yes you have a valid point here.

I have been deeply saddened by what's happened in Ireland over the past 20 years, but this is again, a different conversation to what you originally stated.

I think if I have traced my ancestry back to Irish slaves who were shipped across the ocean to Jamaica by your precious Cromwell, I have every ing right to hold a little bit of a grudge, thank you very much.
srussell0018
Like America, "Great Britain" is a nation founded on taking other people's land and calling it their own, and slaughtering whomever dissented. I don't find that to be a valid way to form a "nation."

Regardless, this is completely off topic, so I'll end my rant there.

I didn't miss it. Do you have ancestors who were part of any of these atrocities?

Yes, I had a few relatives that were killed in the 1st and 2nd World Wars.

One not based on the systemized murder or relocation of indigenous peoples.
