You know, I want to get some opinions from people around the world about this subject;
As a Brit (but not living in the UK anymore) I have to say I was mortified and frankly embarrassed by both the opening and closing ceremonies, which all of my american friends here feel the same way about. Bad concepts, bad production, terrible music, terrible dancing and a poor showing of Britain's best.
The only thing is, when I spoke to friends and family back home, they all said (at least the opening - not spoken about the closing yet) was one of the greatest spectacles in years, and the entire country was on a high from this fantastic event :wtf:
I literally burst out laughing when I heard that until I realized they were serious.
I then spoke to a couple of other people dotted around the world and they didn't even want to talk about it at first for fear of offending me, if they told me honestly how utterly it was.
It seems from this limited sample, that people in the UK thought the opening and closing were absolutely amazing, and the whole rest of the world thought it was embarrassingly atrocious.
What do you all think? (and for Brits commenting, please put national pride aside and be honest) |

I absolutely loved it. Granted, I've been very much influenced by British culture and it was nice to see the characters and artists I like being shown to the whole world (I never thought I'd live to hear the Prodigy being played in such a huge event). However, I remember I was astonished when the Japanese ladies here at the office said "it was boring" and "Beijing was better".
Come on! The Mother Queen and James Bond jumping out of an helicopter is way more awesome than a bunch of drummers in little boxes! I'm pretty sure this is how they saw the ceremonies:

If they already knew you thought it was then they didnt want to talk to you because you have terrible taste. Both ceremonies were awesome, the opening one got praised by everyone across the world. The frech were singing it praises and even the goddamn chinese said it was awesome. You people who didnt like it are the odd ones out. |

Well with all the buzzing zeitgeist from proximity to the epicenter of a veritable supernova of pheromones and corporate sponsorship, I'm sure the lure and tug of jubilance is difficult to deny for the attesting proletariat. |

They didn't know, that's why I said they hesitated, for fear of offending when they told me how it was.
If they already knew I thought it was , and they also thought it was also , then why would they hesitate to tell me so?
Please try to keep up. |

| I saw about an hour of the closing, but I liked it so far. Some things I would have done differently, but what the hell, why complain about that. I already was expecting the Pet Shop Boys at the opening, so this was a nice surpise. Also "Running up that hill" still gives me goosebumps. |

I thought the opening ceremony was brilliant. I was thoroughly entertained. Mind you, I did not watch Beijing's, and have very little recollection of previous opening ceremonies, so I don't have much to compare it to. This is the first time I became interested in the Olympics, it has to be said.
However, I found myself utterly bored and disinterested during parts of the closing ceremony, mainly due to the atrocious music (but that is all subjective). Also, I think the excitement dies down by the time the closing ceremony comes. And I had a sad throughout. :(
The games were la pièce de résistance anyway. And those were fantastic, I will not soon forget London 2012. |

Telling someone in writing to learn how to read is a bit counter intuitive. Just FYI. Guess you are grouped with similar people though, since the worlds reaction was hugely positive for both. |
