^^ I've seen alot of alt-rock/metal nigthclubs/bars do that number clicker thing.
WOW... after reading several pages of this thread... I'm fortunate to have been working the night of this event.
I remember being at Guv for Ferry and for the night with Crystal Method a while ago. Both of those nights were simply packed. Ferry's night was worse. Absolutely ing packed. Getting out of the place was interrupted by bouncers being paid off to bring ppl out thru a security exit o the back wall. THere's definitely troubles with the bouncers who continually show off their "power and control" over the place rather than just keep everything running smoothly.
Just watch tho... bring big enough names to smaller niteclubs like BoaRedux or SystemSOundbar and it'll get quite packed... but still I must admit that they must put their cap limit in effect... I've never had a bad time @ SystemS.
As for what I hear of the cover charge fro Sasha's night @ guv.... He's a world class DJ... I agree with having the cover raised to a point where the cheap sketchbags and poor gropers are turned off and go home. I also agree with Sasha getting his deserved pay for the trip here, the trip home, his accomodations here and his talented set. On top of that, the guv needs to pay it's numerous staff and still make some kind of profit out of the night. It's a for-profit business like any other. If demand is high, the price goes up. If demand is low then price drops to attract more business.
I remember reading how torotno niteclub cover charges are cheap compared to worldwide cover prices. I think we need to swallow the fact that a decent night should cost more to get what we want.
We should also remember that there's more ppl at these events that aren't members of our music-loving forums such as TA, Tribe, etc... so not every1 realizes that anything is going wrong.
I'm not sure what else to add now... since almost everything's been brought out.. so yea. have a nice day! |

| If there is one thing we can agree on, its that Toronto nightlife is a bargain. I do think prices need to rise but i do remember reading people bitch on here a few times that $35 or $40 at guv was a rip off. So you see, you will never please everyone. |

| You could always come 3 hours south to where I live, Rochester NY and pay $20 US to watch Crystal Meth spin (read : not live PA). I have been up to the guv a few times in the past year, Hamilton, a feb 14 party at a music hall, couple trips to the comfort zone, and Boa. I was packed in with the rest of you for Amin and still managed to have a good time. I do admit, being shoved, poked, and prodded can be a bit overwhelming. But appreciate what you have. You do not have to drive 3 hours to see it. You are not paying all that much to see top DJs. You do not have a 3 hour drive home. You live in a city where it is OK to listen to electronic music. Sure the bouncers can seem like blockheads at the guv, but if I was sober I would be pissed at all the sketched out people at 8am needing to get the heck out. I dunno.. I agree with what has been said but it could be much worse. We have no good clubs, we go home at 2am from the bars. ATB was the largest gathering we have had in years. That my friends is sad. |

That letter from Guv is priceless too. They may as well have a template for use after any major event, hahahaha:
"[insert date]
We, at the Guvernment Nightclub, wish to apologize to those who expressed their displeasure of the [insert date] evening.
[insert DJ] was booked at the Guvernment at [insert price] per person, affording as many people as possible to attend. The response was so overwhelming that we tried to appease most patrons by bringing them in on time to see [insert DJ]. Unfortunately, this caused confusion and discomfort for many, including our security staff who did not handle it properly.
Our intention was to provide you with a highly paid DJ, who is extremely popular, at a reasonable price. [insert price] per person is below average for a DJ of [insert DJ] calibre. We do, however, take full responsibility for the regrettable behaviour of some of our security staff and to that end, we have reprimanded some and terminated others.
We take your comments seriously and wish to assure you that proper customer service is very important to us. We strive to treat all patrons with respect. We will do better next time.
Yours truly,
The Management

Also, because theres a lower amount of cover charges, bump up the price from $15, to $25 flat...all night. That to me is fair, and may discourage those who are coming to the Guv just because its a "cheap thrill" and place to trip out and look at lazers. |
I agree with you Jeff. There's no point in raising the regular Saturday night cover of $15 because the crowding situations are nowhere near that of special events. But $15-$20 to see Sasha and Steve Porter!!! That's too little. Should have been like $30 in advance and more at the door. A higher cover might deter some who are looking for a "cheap thrill" as Jeff put it or the "gropers" but I highly doubt it'll drive away the sketchbags. They already have money and paying $10-15 more to get in isn't much of a deterrent.
Only solution to this whole overcrowding problem is to actually enforce the caps. Why not have separate lines at special events for ticket holders and ppl who need to buy at the door? At Systems, the bouncers let in whoever has a ticket and the rest, guestlist or not, have to lineup. At guv most of the ticket holders are the ones that are there for the music. Why? Because they cared enough to put some time into buying tickets ahead of time. If the pay-at-door line were controlled for capacity then it wouldn't be so bad on the inside. At least, that's the way I see it. :) |

That's ok, let them bitch. At least it'll be better for those of us that do end up going. |

as long as guys are still trying to get laid, they will still be going to clubs- smoking ban or not- b/c as handy as it is to smoke in their living rooms-- it's kinda tricky to pick up chicks (or see intl dj's or meet new ppl etc)

I work for two restaurants, as well as a club, and the entire city is dead.
Is the no-smoking bylaw to blame?? Doubtfull. Face it, summer in Toronto is lame(except for us party kids), and most people flee the city, especially after Canada Day weekend, and take their two weeks vacation.
We are still only a year removed from SARS and Mad Cow, and the city hasn't recovered.. hell, the Indy weekend was light on attendance, and Canada Day was dead as well. Some clubs are the best in the summer, simply because they aren't filled, or have more of the regulars out since school is over/vacations are being taken.
As for the letter from the Guv, they needed to say a lot more IMO, especially regarding the overcrowding, but @ least they are listening(perhaps the Bouncer's behaviour was crowd flow related).
