Something about Extasy from health Canada references -

quote:
Tape 3035: Ecstasy - The Rave Drug (E, etc.)

Ecstasy is a stimulant drug that also has some hallucinogenic properties. Its chemical name is MDMA. On the street, it's known as "E," XTC, Adam, Euphoria, X, MDM or Love Doves.

Ecstasy can produce feelings of pleasure and euphoria. However, it can also have negative and disturbing effects.

Ecstasy is usually sold as a tablet or capsule that is taken orally. It may also be sold in powder form, or the tablets may be crushed and then snorted. The drug comes in different shapes, sizes and colors, depending on who is making it.

Sometimes users mix Ecstasy with other drugs. LSD is the most common, and this practice is referred to as "candy-flipping."

MDMA was first produced as an appetite suppressant, but it currently has no approved medical use and is a restricted drug in Canada.

In the 1980s, Ecstacy gained popularity as a recreational drug, often used by young people at "raves", or all-night dance parties.

Ecstasy produces effects that usually begin within one hour, and may last for four to six hours.

In low to moderate doses, Ecstasy can produce a mild intoxication, a sense of pleasure, and feelings of euphoria. There is often an increased sense of sociability or closeness with others, and enhanced communication skills. Like all stimulant drugs, Ecstasy may make users feel full of energy and confidence.

However, users may also experience negative effects, sweating, increased blood pressure and heart rate, nausea, grinding of the teeth and jaw pain, anxiety or panic attacks, blurred vision and vomiting.

Even at relatively low doses, strong negative effects may last for days or weeks. These include confusion, panic, insomnia or even convulsions. There is extensive evidence in animals that recreational doses of Ecstasy can cause permanent neurological damage.

Higher doses of Ecstasy may intensify the negative effects described above and possibly produce a distortion in perception, thinking or memory. High doses may also produce psychosis, paranoia, hallucinations, and long-lasting bouts of anxiety or depression.

Regular users, and some occasional users, have reported weight loss, confusion, irritability, depression, paranoia and exhaustion resulting from their use of Ecstasy. Reactions may be severe and unpredictable.

The physical effects of long-term use of Ecstasy have not been thoroughly documented, but jaundice and liver damage were reported after repeated use.

There have been several fatal incidents associated with Ecstasy use at raves.

In England, deaths have occurred from kidney or heart failure resulting from very high body temperature and dehydration. Young people attending all-night raves sometimes over-exert themselves while dancing. Combine this with the heat, perspiration and failure to drink enough fluids, and there is a much greater risk of harm.

Individuals who use Ecstasy at raves should be advised to wear loose, thin clothing, take breaks from dancing, and drink plenty of water or other non-alcohol beverages.

Herbal Ecstacy, which spells the word Ecstasy differently, has gained popularity recently among ravers as a "safer" alternative to ecstasy. Some people claim that the product is "all natural" and contains no chemicals.

That's not true. Herbal Ecstacy contains caffeine and an herb known as Ma Huang, which contains ephedrine, a stimulant. Certain weight-loss products using the same combination of drugs have resulted in heart attacks and a number of deaths.

Some athletes use ephedrine to enhance their performance. Possible negative effects linked to the abuse of ephedrine include headache, dizziness, insomnia, irritability, hypertension and stroke.

The use of Ecstasy is still relatively rare among young people in Ontario, but it is rising.

In the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health's 1995 Ontario Student Drug Use Survey, 1.8 per cent of students questioned reported they had used Ecstasy. That is an increase from 0.6 per cent in 1993. In the 1995 study, young men were twice as likely to use the drug then young women.

If you're asking when people are all falling over the place completely KO'ed in the guv, they could be
really drunk
on K
on haroine [yeah I've seen about 4 haroine addicts at the guv]
on a mix of too many drugs
on too much of any particular drug

As for these negative effects, they are VERY rare. 106 deaths in 3 years was the quote from a couple pages back, when an estimated 20 million pills per year were consumed.
Insomnia lasts up to 12 hours after use, paranoia, convulsions I have never seen or even heard of at low doses, only high ones. Paranoia I seriously doubt it, unless you are aprehensive about taking the drug in the first place, in which case the drug is not to blame. Repeated high doses can cause depression due to the lack of seratonin in the body. But as evidence shows with time the body heals itself and balances out it's seratonin levels.

Blah, just because I haven't personally dosed, doesn't mean I can't find credible information on it. First hand users and erowid are sufficient sources granting me valid opinion on the subject.

quote:
For your information, the "sketchy depression" i.e. "hangover" only really affects chronic users. Many, including myself, have felt great for a week afterwards, long after the physical effects wore off. When the afterglow wears off, things are just back to normal. Not everybody has harsh comedowns or depression... I think only a small percentage do.

Okay, I stand corrected.

Please, do yourself and everyone else a favour and don't "admonish" someone while they're rolling. That's basically being a jackass and ruining their good time.

Err, I didn't mean I run up to them on the dancefloor... I meant I would try to counsel them against it later, if I felt as though the drug was impacting someone's life in adverse ways.

quote:
No doubt chronic ecstasy use can lead to depression, but I really don't think that's the issue in question here. I am sure that the majority of those people are aware of the damage they are doing to themselves, just as with cigarette smokers.

To sum it up: anything can be consumed in moderation. Nothing can be consumed in excess. The problem is, drug habbits are rarely moderated. Especially with E, which chemically alters your body into having the best time of your life. After that, the only way to reach the same euphoric state is by, you guessed it, dosing again. I know friends who have had sex on E and are extremely depressed because nothing can naturally simulate the feeling.

I've heard that one before and I agree...Many people lose track of the moderation after as well and go into harder stuff and then they realize how ed up they are when it's too late.
