Welcome to the real world, population: everyone else!!

Every couple of months I get run down and re-evaluate my workload and the things I'm doing, wondering if it's too much. I slow down for about a week or so, but I just like being busy. Getting run down is inevitable for me.

So how would you classify decongestants when you've got a bad cold?

You don't need them. They just alleviate the symptoms.

I would say dont use them often. I mean, if its really bad, yeah, but not all the time. If you do ur body will become kind of dependant on it the next time, and i think ur immune system loses its ability to fight it off on its own since its been facilitated so many times b4.

That's true we all live a busy lifestyle but look at countries like France or Italy for example. They have huge vacation times, people really know that works and being busy isn't everything, and people know how to enjoy life with good food, good body, and etc. I really think this "busy, busy, busy" lifestle is not only unhealthy but it's potentially dangerous all together. Not to mention that I don't know if it's worth it...

Maybe we should take example from these countries and take it easy sometimes...after all there's been quite a few threads here lately about how Europeans know how to live and enjoy themselves and we don't... :(

Decongestants don't affect your immune system. They don't help you fight off the virus at all, they just help clear sinuses, get to sleep, and so on. That's why people hate them so much - instead of staying home from work and sleeping it off, they go out feeling like a million bucks and pass their germs onto everyone else.

Starsearcher, you never gave a straight answer to my question, and it was a simple yes or no question. OTC cold medicine - is there a problem taking those for a bad cold, even though you don't NEED them?

No it's not a problem...but I also said leave out medicine long time ago ;)

By the way as someone who DOES have a ed up sinus...I would strongly suggest people to stay away from all these decongestants...and also antibiotics unless is absolutely necessary!

So medicine's OK in your book, including cold medicine.

Interesting... ever drink a bottle of Robitussin?

No I haven't actually :toothless why do you ask?

And no not all medicine is okay but in some cases the suffering of the person outweighs the side effects the medicine might cause - it's still a matter of opinion though! Just the same as - should doctors help kill patients that are suffering too much? ;) Think about it...

Well I'm glad you admit that it's a matter of opinion. A wide variety of cold medications contain DXM, a dissociative anaesthetic. Supposedly it "helps" people in small doses, and I suppose it does in products like NyQuil. Then you have those that drink an entire bottle of Robitussin Maximum Strength to get high (DON'T EVER DO THIS). Sometimes high doses of DXM are even sold in lousy ecstasy pills.

The potential for abuse exists with any drug, legal or illegal, recreational or medical!

It's just part of the culture here.

In Europe, you can be more relaxed and it's cool, because everyone else is. So relatively speaking, you're still on par with everyone else.

Here, if you adopt a more european lifestyle/attitude towards work, you get behind.

Yeah I guess that's true...but I still think that's wrong. I don't know how they are keeping their economy up with being more relaxed to be honest but thumbs up for them - they seem to be doing a wonderful job at it.
