Yeah that was pretty surprising news this morning. I thought Bosh really wanted to play with Lebron. But Bosh and Wade would be an awesome combo. Now I really wonder who's gonna come to Toronto. Amare, Dirk, Joe Johnson, Pierce, Wade, Bosh are signed now. Ray Allen will probably resign.
We also have Turk's stupid contract and no one will probably want him for that price. |

I don't think they need to.
I've been talking about this all morning on another message forum, and well, there are several points of interest about this story:
1. The guy who broke this story chris broussard of espn, is the same guy who just YESTERDAY said the sign and trade for bosh to cleveland was happening. And ESPN in general has never been the network known for it's accuracy on trades, signings, or even analysis of the game itself. Don't believe it until it happens.
2. Assuming it's true, this sounds like a squeeze from miami to get chris his max deal. A day before the players have the ability to officially sign with their new clubs, a story is broken that bosh is willing to sign for 5 years.....sounds kinda fishy. Besides, it's been well documented that BC has been playing hardball in S&T scenarios, so it's understandable if others are trying the same on us. Bosh of the big 3 on the market this year is the least likely to leave the $30mil on the table, as he earns the least in endorsements, and is the most likely to go to another team and play the robin to the wade/lebron's batman.
3. Miami has to surround both Wade and Bosh with good players, and to do that, they have to unload a couple of bad contracts. A S&T would require us to likely take beasley in return, a guy Miami hasn't been able to pay people to take, and a guy BC has already shot down numerous times in S&T scenarios.
4. TPE and picks....well to build a team Miami will likely want to keep their TPE, as it give them leverage in deals in this offseason in filling out their roster, and their trade picks will likely be marginal if they're going for a celtic's style turnaround.
so with the fact that the Heat have little to offer the raptors in a S&T, I'm pretty much ok with letting bosh walk for nothing. Besides, it's not like cleveland has anything we want either, the Bulls aren't giving up any part of their core, [namely joakim noah], and for bosh to go to houston, well he'll be batman on a thinner team that has to go thru the lakers. I think that even if bosh walks for nothing it's a good thing, as it at least sets the landscape for what needs to be done with this team, and finally gets the FA monkey off our backs.
Beyond that, a few interesting things might be done with the MLE we've got. Rumours have one of Ryan Gomes, Lineas Kleiza, or Travis Outlaw signing with the raps. Personally, Travis Outlaw sounds mighty fine to me. A dude who can play the 2-3-4, has a freakish long wingspan, killer midrange jumper, a 40" vertical. Think of it, Ed Davis, Sonny Weems, Demar, Outlaw, and even Amir. Talk about high flying highlight reels every night! We'd put the Carter-TMac days to shame if we can only lock up a pg who can keep up in the open floor. |

def. won't get boo'd, and not a bi@tch like Carter. He did give'r throughout his time here.
He says he took less money to go to Miami & play w/ Wade & pass up being signed with Cleveland because he wasn't sure what LeBron was doing. |

what pisses me off is that toronto took a risk by not dealing him before the dead line. BC should have traded him even if there was the slightest chance he wouldn't resign with toronto. To loose a player like Bosh for nothing, assuming the rumor is true that its not a sign and trade, seems to be the MLSE way and BC needs to be held accountable for this. |

At the deadline our team was flying high. You can't blame BC for wanting to ride the team out to see what we were capable of. 5th in the east with Boston in our sights, if he were to make moves we would have called him crazy at that time.
And like I said. Doing a S&T just for the sake of getting something isn't the way to go. If you're absorbing other team's garbage just to put $30mil in Bosh's pocket, that's far worse IMO. The only way we were gonna get some usefulness out of the situation was if we brought a 3rd team into the deal, but it would have been hard to flip a player like beasley or deng, like the reports had us taking on in those deals. I fully respect for the way BC and the raps handled this situation.
EDIT:
if you wanna get mad at BC, get mad at him for the JO trade, the trade the gave the heat the ability to sign chris in the first place! |

| good for bosh, glad to see him teamed up with a star like wade. now only if they could get a decent team behind them. Bosh should get a standing ovation and kings welcome when he returns to TO. Now on the other hand, hedo needs to off and die. If he returns to TO I'll be furious and he should be boo'd at every touch of the ball. |

AFAIK, the Raps don't need to take Beasley in a sign-and-trade. They could take Anthony, maybe Chalmers too, and then have a fat trade exception, for example. the Heat don't "trade" a TPE, the Raps simply get one by not taking on the salary they are shipping out. you also can't trade a TPE.
while the Raps would only have a year to use part/all of that trade exception, I'm sure some teams are still looking to dump salary and it lets the Raps deal with anyone in the league (rather than just Miami) to help them replace Bosh. I'm sure BC is pushing for that scenario.
The risk to the Raps in playing hardball (i.e. refusing Beasley) is that Miami says no and persuades Bosh to walk for nothing...but unless Lebron joins or they bring in others, Bosh probably wants his cash/years, so it's not all on BC to play nice.
if Bosh simply signs as a FA, that will still leave ~4mil in cap room + the mid-level exception for the Raps, I think I read. It's not much, but the only thing worse than Bosh leaving for nothing is taking back a contract for a player the Raps don't want.
By Wade and Bosh coming out and saying they are signing, the idea seems to be to provide incentive to other FAs (i.e. Lebron) to get on board too (just as Boozer signing with the Bulls in meant to do the same). It also leaves Wade and/or Bosh (and a FA) to take less money to bring in Lebron and/or others.
If Lebron signs elsewhere, Bosh (and Wade) could still pressure Miami to work a sign-and-trade, even on Toronto's terms, so that he gets his max cash/years...by threatening to otherwise bail. before you dismiss that (and yes it is very very unlikely), remember that Turk had a verbal agreement with Portland before suddenly bailing and coming to Toronto, lol.
Miami is still under much pressure too. Amare and Boozer have already committed elsewhere. the Knicks are rumoured to have a deal worked out with the Warriors to send them David Lee if Lebron rebukes them, Miami would then be turning to 2nd tier free agents. if that happens, Bosh is more likely to want max money via sign-and-trade and that might mean caving to not requiring that the Raps take Beasley.
and that could all be thrown out the window with some crazy, unforeseen moves, lol.
the next 24-48 hours are going to be very, very interesting :)
edit: as an aside...if it were up to me, I'd have traded Bargnani and replaced him with a defensive minded C who primarily rebounds and defends the basket. Bosh might still be here and the Raps would be better off, IMHO. |

WOW THIS WOULD BE AN EPIC TEAM!! It'll probably be a good thing that Raps don't sign anyone big for a while and wait it out while Miami wins championships after championships.
Numerous reports Thursday morning said James is likely to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh with the Miami Heat, a development that positions the team as an immediate NBA contender.
Newsday reported James was leaning toward Miami, and ESPN has reported James will join the Heat barring a change of heart before his scheduled announcement.

there are a lot of problems when you have three superstars on one team. Who is going to be the go to guy....egos will need to be kept in check. Miami isn't going to have any kind of bench...they may have to sign some mexican workers to fill the last few spots. If one of these guys goes down with an injury they will be in trouble....and Bosh is good for at least 10 games out. |

it's not epic yet. they still need to fill up the roster and good luck managing those egos, although Riley might be second only to Jackson in being able to handle that. Look for Riley's return to the sidelines if they snag Lebron (though I still say he resigns in Clevland)
from that link:
"It's gotten ridiculous," Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. "It's almost like a parody of itself this whole situation now. Come on, an hour long? It takes 15 seconds to say I've decided to stay in Cleveland but we've got another 59 minutes and 45 seconds to, what? Promote LeBron James?"
agreed...and good for him for saying so. IMHO, Lebron is coming off like an immature little kid in this whole thing, though I'm sure his team of leeches and 'yes men' are a big reason for that too.
I certainly won't be watching this bull. I'll read about it afterwards.
side note: Allen resigns with Boston for 2yrs, 20mil total. one less 'piece' for Miami, so the pressure continues to build. |
