There are many many different variations of traditional female genital modification, some more and some less severe than the classic procedure for male genital modification. All variations are (rightly) illegal.
Needless to say the consequences for some of the more severe forms of female genital modification are quite horrific, particularly in terms of the complications that arise during childbirth. |

It pools results from three seperate studies conducted in different countries. On closer inspection, one looks like it is the South Africa study you mentioned, so my mistake there, but it also uses two other studies of similar size, and all three were stopped early due to the significance of the findings. |
