| i bet all the guys in this thread fighting pro-circumcision are cut, and all the guys who think it's unethical are uncut. this just proves that no matter what you do, your son will be fine either way and will probably be satisfied in defending his Jews lance or anteater when the topic comes up in 20 years on whatever message board he decides to post on. |

| So then Myra, as a woman, do you have any particular preference? Or just any (clean) dick is a good dick? |

Hey, well that's fair enough. I figured I should ask someone in the profession, you know?

1. There is no medical reason to remove the foreskin. |

What would be a reason for cutting? |
circumcision reduces the risk of contracting AIDS from penile-vaginal intercourse. |

I didn't know that.
I think I'll go and cut off a part of my penis, and never bother with condoms again. Being sexually responsible was a stupid idea right from the start.
Wait, what? |

The study that found that connection was flawed, and even then the decrease wasn't that great:

Also of note:
| quote: | | A recent study looking at sensitivity of the penis in the circumcised and uncircumcised male found that the five most sensitive areas on the penis are removed at circumcision, and that the keratinized glans on the circumcised penis is less sensitive than the foreskin-protected, mucosa-lined glans on the uncircumcised penis. The skin removed from the penis at circumcision makes up close to 50% of the total penile skin, amounting to 15 square inches in an adult. |

nevertheless, its an official WHO statement and somehow I think they know more about health than you.
And no its not a huge decrease - its a reduction, not an elimination of risk. You still need to be proactive in other areas of prevention.
The quotes were people saying there was no medical basis nor reason to do it. Well there is, a reduciton of AIDS risk.
Still, i never said I'd do it my kid. |

in terms of the function of the foreskin, it serves 2 purposes:
1 - it keeps the glans (which nature intended to be covered by a thin membrane, and hence very sensitive) protected. Removing it removes the protection and changes the nature of the glans from semi-internal to completely external as the membrane is replaced with regular skin.
2 - it allows for a "glide action" during intercourse.. further reducing friction and making the experience more pleasurable, and less abrasive.[/color]

This AND basically no one outside America thinks that foreskins are ugly.
It makes sex better for the man involved and the woman involved. Pretty unfair to have no choice about it!
Also, ask any uncircumsized guy if he can feel anything after walking around for a day with his foreskin uncovered. |

| As has already been mentioned, if you leave your child uncut, they can easily choose to have their foreskin removed later. Thus, circumcision at birth is stupid. |

If the statement is based on that particular study I'd contend it's conclusions are open to question as is the statement...
I often ask for second opinions or simply question authority based on reasoned analysis and have never accepted "doctor knows best" as an adequate reply. |
