So you're living in ignorance? That's cool, I guess.

I am very green, but I am neither a vegan or a vegetarian, if different. Steak has alot of good stuff for you along with fat. but i can't never say no to a new york steak with a baked potato on the side

otherwise we would probably still be gorilas. Or Australopithecus africanus.

Hey hey now, we might have come from Australopithecus afarensis... at least according to Leakey.

Anyway, this thread has gone in some weird directions, but it's good.

I find it odd that most people are taking the anthropocentric standpoint. I was anticipating justifications to be more from the anthropological standpoint. Some really interesting contributions here.

LOL @ the argument RE: morality.

EDIT:

If someone asked me how I justified buying a car, and I replied "because I like it", wouldn't it seem like a simple minded thing to say?

Reality is, I probably justified it by determining that I had enough funds to buy it, that the purchase wouldn't negatively affect anything, that having a car would save me X amount of time etc. etc.

The reasoning of "because I like it" seems quite shallow. Perhaps an appropriate elaboration would be that you feel that humans are at the top of the food chain and thus, can eat whatever they want? That humans are more important than other animals? That animals are inferior and don't know any better, or if they are stupid enough to let us eat them, then too bad?

I dunno, something with a little more substance to it.

I take the "because I like it" statements to be some type of derivative of this attitude, but I was hoping that there would be some elaborations or clarifications behind it. Something to support the statement.

You're comparing what is essentially a want rather than a need, ie a car, to what is essentially a need not a want, ie food?

How ridiculous can you people get? I swear the more time that passes, the more strawman arguments people start using.
Lews
Eating meat is a want, definitely not a need.

I was giving an example of the elaboration I was looking for... the subject of the example is irrelevant. You can use whatever subject you want to fill in the blanks. What I am trying to say is that "because I like it" is a simple minded response and there is likely more to it than that.

However, if the subject is what you want to argue, fine. Eating meat is not required. Eating meat is a choice; people can choose not to eat it, and therefore it becomes a want. You want to eat meat, you want to include it in your diet, you do not want to be an herbivore.

If I was simply comparing it to food in general, then your argument would be valid, but I am not.

Protege
wtf are chickens and cows for if not to eat?
