wouldn't we have an extreme overpopulation of edible animals if we didn't?

For the religious, many people argue that 'God made other animals for us to eat', and it is loosely supported by various scriptures where Jesus eats meat, where eating meat is referred to and encouraged etc. etc.

If someone said "what makes you such a special animal that you can justify eating any other animal you want?", would you reply with "because it tastes nice"?

Although I have considered those type of answers in my paper, I don't think they hold a lot of merit. There is more to it than that. Is it because your family fed you meat and you therefore believe it is ok to eat other animals? Going far enough back in your lineage, did they eat meat because they simply needed it for energy and it was the only thing available?

Try to analyze it beyond "it tastes good and vegans are fags". LOL!

Extinction is more likely. Or do you think that wild cows would roam the countryside?

honestly, it's what I was brought up with, and I enjoyed it. Meat is a big portion of my diet and I have no problems with it, eating many forms of meat, game etc. It is also delicious and that's pretty much it, when you like something, you don't feel the need to justify the whys so much as if you don't do it.

most of those edible animals are raised for human consumption, so if we didnt eat them.. well :P

I don't see why you'd expect there to be any deeper reason here. For most people it really is as simple as this:

I have to eat something.
I decide between foods based on which tastes better.
I think meat tastes better.
Therefore I eat meat.

I doubt it. Most of the meat we eat is farmed; if we didn't farm them, we would have wiped out the beef and chicken populations probably a thousand times over again. Natural causes (and human destruction) would probably control populations.

It seems that for the most part, populations don't eat monkeys (despite being edible), and yet there are many primates going extinct. We don't typically eat bears, and they are endangered as well. So eating them to control their population doesn't seem logical.

Well they also say that the world was created in 6 days and that Jeebus could walk on water and heal the sick...so a lot of bull in there...

The most honest reason would be, we do it for the same reason the animal do it, because we can and it tastes nice.

Let's say I am a crazy vegan and I say "who do you think you are, eating other animals? Maybe you taste good, but I don't eat you! You can't justify eating humans but you can justify eating other animals?"

Responding with "it tastes good and I don't like humans" is not a real argument. You aren't justifying it, you are simply giving reason as to why you keep doing it... because you like it. Well don't you like fruits and veggies? Why can't you only eat those?
