Meat eaters! Why do you eat other animals? (pg. 9)

I'm an omnivore, meat provides the sustenance that I need and it tastes delicious but to be honest, I don't feel like I need to justify it.

If I needed to justify why I eat broccoli, how would I do it? Hmmm.....

Yeah, because it's not like the apes we evolved from eat meat. And it's not like we have teeth specifically designed to chew meat. Or eyes set in the front of our head so we can catch prey. Or any other clear evidence the species has been eating meat for millions of years before scientific studies or moral objections were invented.

Right?

Then how about the fact that we don't have any claws. If we were naturally supposed to catch food, we would need some way of doing it. We're not as fast or quick as many predators, there is no way for us to catch animals without arrows/spears/nets, etc.

Or that are teeth are designed to chew things, not to rip flesh off a carcass and swallow it.

Dolphins don't have claws, either.

Chimps don't have claws, nor particularly sharp teeth, but they are perfectly good predators.

/facepalm

We don't need claws, we have perfectly adequate brains instead. You realise that self awareness and opposable thumbs are the greatest evolutionary developments ever?

We are superior to all animals purely because of what we can accomplish. To say we're not evolved to eat meat shows just how little you know about evolution.

Responding with "it tastes good and I don't like humans" is not a real argument. You aren't justifying it, you are simply giving reason as to why you keep doing it... because you like it. Well don't you like fruits and veggies? Why can't you only eat those?

I'd have no problem with someone eating human meat, so long as the person wasn't killed for it and consented to their body being eaten.

So why is it wrong to farm/kill humans for food and not animals? Considerations of intelligence and self-awareness aside, We have developed morals that allow us to maximise our happiness - ie by all agreeing not to torture/kill each other society as a whole is better off. Like any social animal we have rules that apply within the group to all members of the group that allow the group as a whole to live in better conditions. This is all it is.. I know we intuitively think of rape and murder as somehow universally wrong, but in reality we have in a sense "evolved" these beliefs to make all of society better off.

If I, for example, start killing people and this goes unpunished then it becomes a new societal standard. None of us would want to live in a society where it is ok to kill people on a whim, after all you can't know whether you are going to be the killer or the victim on any given day. So we create a rule that murder is wrong. The only benefit of this rule is that it makes us all safer and therefore happier. The same rationale does not apply to non-members of the society such as cows. If I kill a cow and eat it, and no one judges me for it and this becomes an acceptable mode of behaviour it doesn't harm any members of the group and therefore is ok.

I am interested to know if people would use religion to back it up, or if there is a different reason (evolutionary/scientific etc.)

Unique answers are appreciated and please don't be afraid to admit if it's because of religion. If it is, please clarify (specific scriptures etc.)

evolution and cause its so damn tasty
