I stand by my point that the two reasons people eat meat is selfishness and laziness.

It's becoming clear in this thread the reason people become vegetarians is a burning sense of self-righteousness and moral superiority that just has to find an outlet somewhere.

And you really don't need to eat that much. It's quite easy to get energy and not eat meat.

It is easy for you when you have the convenience of modern plant foods that were bred especially to be calorie-dense. Try surviving on nothing but plants in most prehistoric environments. Or heck, try doing it in the wild *now.*

The human body doesn't need anywhere near as many grams of protein as people assume, assumptions that are mostly due to the lovely advertising and lobbying of the meat industry.

Yeah, like the grain industry is such a lightweight in the lobbying department.

Did you seriously just ask that?

Go look up the word Vegan in a dictionary, please.

So, neither of you are going to even touch the original question I asked?

I made a mistake in not specifically acknowledging that fine difference between vegan and vegetarian, but that still doesn't change the point I'm making. Where do you draw the line? Why do animals get the holy treatment, but everything else is fine to barbarically munch away on?

because my ancestors spent thousands of laborous years of domesticating animals for the purpose of eating them. turning down meat in my diet is no worse than spitting on their graves and turning my back on the innovation of human beings and evolution of culture and society.

It's as much about where what you eat comes from, as it is what you're eating.

Don't have time to sift through 20+ pages to see if it's been mentioned, but:

...is a good place to start.

I enjoy meat because it tastes good.

Also, try asking a cow this very question, he would kill you and everyone you love in an instant. So yea. When cows stop eating cows I will stop eating cows.

Eating meat can be directly linked to osteoporosis, cancer, kidney disease, and heart diseases.

Innuit and Chukcha peoples eat more meat than any Westerner. They have almost no vegies in their diet.. all they eat is seal, walrus, whale and fish, the fat of the first three being particularly prized. They have low obesity, low blood cholesterol (with a high level of "good" cholesterol) and very low rates of the diseases you mentioned (heart disease and strokes in particular were almost unheard of in these communities until they started eating processed foods). People in Greece and France are heavy meat eaters and have lower levels of cancer... and so on and so on

People with pre-existing kidney disease can benefit from a protein-restricted diet, but there is ZERO evidence that having a balanced amount of animal protein can in any way increase the chance of a healthy person developing kidney disease.

There is no evidence that animal protein lowers bone density or causes osteoporosis. There is evidence that lowered vitamin D ( a problem for many vegans) is a risk factor, however. Also I believe that statistically vegan women have been shown to have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than women eating a balanced diet....

This info is pretty widespread in peer reviewed research. Information indicating the opposite is found almost exclusively in pro-vegetarian propaganda. At the end of the day any justification of vegetarianism comes down to either that meat is unethical because it is wasteful or meat is unethical because it = murder.
