it IS as simple as taste theresa, cmon now. |
To you, maybe. But there have been some very heated discussions about this topic that go beyond taste and there are quite a few philosophers who have dedicated entire papers to the subject. If the only way to justify it was 'it tastes good', then there would be no point in writing a paper on it, but some people (including my prof apparently) seem to think otherwise.

Responding with "it tastes good and I don't like humans" is not a real argument. You aren't justifying it, you are simply giving reason as to why you keep doing it... because you like it. Well don't you like fruits and veggies? Why can't you only eat those? |
Why would you only eat one if you have both more options available? And humans are wery delicious...ask any lion, tiger or bear if he would like to eat a human for lunch. |

In other words, are you trying to say that there isn't enough non-meat food supplies to feed the entire planet? That in order to survive we must eat meat so as to have enough food to go around? |
That would be a pretty terrible argument to try to advance, as the resources in terms of space, energy, and water needed to produce animal products is larger then to produce an equivalent amount of grain. |

using anything other than personal preference when choosing what you eat is stupid and hypocritical.
you're really going to take a principled stand on not eating meat? are you kidding me? do you know how many other injustices there are in the world that trump the suffering of cows (which lead a better life under humans than they would in the wild, where they would get torn to shreds by wolves)?
not to mention the hypocrisy that goes along with taking such a stand. if you support anything generated by capitalism, then you are supporting the destruction of the environment anyway. might as well go live in the woods then |

Well they also say that the world was created in 6 days and that Jeebus could walk on water and heal the sick...so a lot of bull in there...
The most honest reason would be, we do it for the same reason the animal do it, because we can and it tastes nice. |
LOL, I am the last person who will try and reason out any religious stuff, I am just recognizing that some will use religious belief to justify it.
So why do some animals who are capable of eating meat only eat fruits? For example, apes. They have diets that consist of fruits, nuts, veggies etc. and yet that are obviously capable of eating insects and probably pretty large animals if they cared to. Yet, they don't and they seem to be doing fine, despite their size.
Vegans aren't dying... so obviously we are capable of subsisting off of an herbivore diet. But, some people choose to still eat animals. How do you justify killing other animals for your own enjoyment when you could leave them alone and eat fruits and veggies instead? |

It tastes good and I don't care if they have to kill animals for me to get what I want.
That any better? |

how do you justify typing on a computer, made by a company that was created out of the fruits of capitalism that was at one point based off of or thrived because of imperialism, which has been responsible for countless deaths and exploitation of the third world? |

Let's say I am a crazy vegan and I say "who do you think you are, eating other animals? Maybe you taste good, but I don't eat you! You can't justify eating humans but you can justify eating other animals?"

Their question does not call for any argument as a response because it supplies no argument of its own.
If they're going to object to my conduct, the burden is first upon them to provide some objective reason why I shouldn't engage in it. Since they cannot carry that burden, my personal preference alone is sufficient justification. |

Not really. My point is that even if you don't eat meat, countless animals die so you can survive.
| quote: | | This isn't an argument to point out why vegans are stupid/wrong/whatever, it's simply "why do you eat meat?" Beyond the 'it tastes good' response, what does it come down to? |
We eat meat by default. We are clearly, undisputably evolved to do just that. There needs to be a reason not to eat meat before it even needs justifying. |
