Guess it all depends.
If you compare the early MFS PvD, Tresor/EWerk PvD to the 1996 version, vs, say, the 2001 to today PvD, then that's the context where I can't see the '96 version needing to be defended.
But if you just do 92 vs 96, guess all subjective.
I'd be happy with the just-leaving-his-twenties version
