Ugh, my heart :( :( :sadgreen:
Chose a damn good time to retire :( :( Saturday night was proof that i left for good reason, its just not enjoyable anymore, on any level. I really just don't like the sound at ALL, but i wont judge anyone for it, I mean, my mom used to tell me to stop blasting my " music" when i was pumpin old 1999 Oakenfold Essential Mixes. lol Although, i say again, Carl Cox on friday proved that I may need to make a random appearance to the "dark side" now and again.
Marcello, for the record- if I was still going out every weekend (or at all) I would certainly be hitting up your parties. Obviously that doesn't make you any cha-ching, but I have always loved what you have done for music, the local NYC scene, and your fans everywhere. Also, love that you played Ferry- Take Me.....probably the best track he has produced in recent history, maybe the last? :( :(

sound doesn't mean it's not classified as Trance....
It's not hard to understand:
AY's point is that what is labeled as trance today is so dissimilar to trance from 12-14 years ago (certainly the 20 year old stuff), that it shouldn't be called that anymore.
Up to you to agree or not, personally, think that's right.
And many others agree.
As to the very very many of those that don't (and I wouldn't POSSIBLY know if that includes you):
most of them don't have the real background to offer a credible opinion, because they don't have the background (they could, youtube is out there, but...).
Why do you cling to the word?
There is nothing negative per-se about "trouse", for example, it's just another word.
quote:
As long as it's melodic and harmonic in sound it's Trance... it doesn't need to be 140+ BPM
you just ensured that this threat will keep on giving

... and just because YOU don't think it's Trance doesn't make it so.
see above. in isolation i would have to agree, but that is not the case here.
Ever listen to other music?
Take swing:
If for some reason, that word had assumed so much need-to-maintain, and then people started applying it to bee-bop
[jazz = edm in this context...],
what is left of the descriptive "swing", other than a shell to be filled with whatever?

Apples and Oranges!
I highly doubt your mom used to listen to Oakie before you did, and that she was complaining about THAT Oakie being , versus HER Oakie being really worthwhile!
In other words, if you'd been blasting grunge, or industrial, you would've had the same reaction I bet.
And why not judge? It's fun!
People suck!
ok, that's a rip-off, confess:

It's really an amazing song. It was probably the peak song in my set and went down incredibly with the 12,000 people that were there. But you won't hear anyone else ever play it, and it boggles my mind.

Speaking of Oakie, my dad bought Global Underground NYC long time ago. I caught him once listening to it and I was like where did you get this? He bought it off of some friend...

Couldn't agree more with you (on two things) CarS.
First of all, people are just getting freaked out when you say "trouce" just like they did when people in the early 2000s would call stuff by like My Chemical Romance, Emo Rock... Like, that's what it is? What's the big deal.
Secondly, with your comment about Swedish. I never ever think in my head "wow this is really powerful great stuff" when I'm at a show like at the Garden, I think "wow this is really fun to just hang out with friends that can listen to music that is along the same lines of what I like to listen to".
During the storm when I went to see Eco, I had a friend with me who was like "this isn't trance" and I had to explain to her the difference. It's not that she didn't like it, but she just had in her head that the music was a certain sound and what she was hearing wasn't it. (Dunno why I said that last point but it felt right haha)

Haha ok, if you took it in that context, then yes, I see your point. I was merely referring to generational differences. Example- as someone who works extensively with urban youth, I can't tell you how many teenagers will fight me to the death that Weezy destroys Pac or Rakim or Wu in (hip hop/rap) talent. To me, this boggles my ing mind, but it's what they are used to, what they love. (I still want to cut them for being so goddamn stupid, but what can I do?)

I hear you, I truly don't know the difference between rap and hip-hop, other than different word for same thing (is that so?)
To me it's all !
(there's a little judgement, not generational though, because rap's been around since before "my time").
One of the best parts of "EDM"'s stateside upsurge:
it's taken a bunch of SUB-urban middle-class wanna-be-urban-kids away from rap... (Vanilla Ice anyone, lol).
Is "Example" hip-hop? Do like him, so tell me he ain't just to make me feel consistent
Oh, glad you appreciated Carlin.
This isn't just a routine, it's actually correct, not just funny.
Also shuts people up when they complain about "you didn't vote, it's your duty?"
:)

As KRS-One once said, "rap is something you do but hip-hop is something you live"
In reality though, I think hip-hop uses a pretty specific beat, or I could be just wrong..

So hip-hoppers rap, but rappers don't necessarily hip-hop!
Do hip-hop poseurs count? They look like they live it.
Guess that makes the wanna-be's I mention hip-hop poseurs?
Again, Vanilla Ice!

maybe so, but one has to care about the category to care about the semantics.
That IS like trying to explain trance vs. trouse to someone who only listens to romantic chamber music

Leave Ice Ice Baby out of this thread or I will cut you :whip:

On a side note I heard many people got screwed over with Stubhub tickets and got stuck outside.
I bought a ticket through StubHub earlier that day but it wasn't accepted when scanned - the first time that ever happened to me, out of many tickets I've bought through StubHub. The MSG box office had a window especially for ticket issues, and I was worried about the way I got the ticket, but the people working there were cool with it and also told me there were still tickets available at their day-of-event ticket sales window. I was still able to get a floor-level seat, for less than what I originally paid and without fees. I also called StubHub right afterwards and had my purchase taken care of, so that my credit card charge would be refunded.
It felt a little weird being at a DJ/dance music event in which there was assigned seating (though it was worse at Avicii @ Radio City and Erasure @ Beacon Theater many years ago), but it was nice to be able to sit whenever I was tired.
