Is there a way to be exempt from paying QST when buying from a dealer? It's a non-issue when buying privately, as I just get the owner to bring the car into Ontario and register it here. Would the same work with a dealer though?

Salt I'm not too worried about, I can look at the car before I buy it. I can CARPROOF the car is well.

The best people to know that are the dealer salespersons.

There might be an exemption on the QST...

What year is that TL? Because you could just go to local dealers and ask them what you want and let them find/quote it for you.

I'm looking for an 04-05. I have been doing exactly that - looking at dealers' auctions. But, like I said, the supply is literally non-existent. I'm fine with buying from Quebec, the only real downside I see is having to travel and doing everything in one day (also not having a trusted mechanic look at the car). Other than that, there's actually a choice and the prices are much better.

I needed a new winter car, and after 12 years with my mini-tank-like Hyundai Accent, I bought another Hyndai, an Elantra this time. They are top-rated best in class by consumer reports as I explained previously. Their resale isn't great compared to Honda or Toyota, but to me as a buyer of a used car, it was an advantage. It's not a head turner of course, but it's a very comfortable car that serves it purpose well.

To sum it up, in 2008 I got a loaded '2003 Hyundai Elantra with only 47k for $7500+tx, cash. That's it. It's a very reliable and economical car that will last me for the next 8+ years, for a rediculously low price, with very low maintenence. I've only needed to do oil changes since I bought it last April :)

I went to test drive a few cars on Saturday and the Elantra was one of my favorites.

To anyone who has taken loans from car dealers, used ones...

How much is too high an interest rate on these car loans? My friend needs a car in a hurry and by Thursday.

Thanks!

0.9%

:p

Seriously though, the rate on my unsecured line of credit right now is 4.25%, so anything above that is definitely too high. Depending on your credit and net worth you should be eligible for loans of between 2 and 4 percent. I wouldn't even bother comparing loans from different dealerships, they all try to rip you off. Best to just ask your bank what they're willing to give, and beat the dealership down from there (if you can).

the best at used I've seen here was like 7.5%!!!

Its better to get a line of credit, its generally much lower than that.

Hey Lisa,

I'm a business manager at the Hyundai dealership in Kingston. I would highly recommend the Elantra as being the best value out there. Especially with the $3,500 Discount, plus low financing (ie. 0% 36mths or low rates for longer terms). The GL Automatic is the most poplular, which gives you cruise, A/C etc. Plus Hyundai gives you a 5 year / 100,000km vehicle & powertrain warranty. Most car companies only put a 3 year / 60,000km vehicle warranty on their cars.

PM me if you have any more questions.. I'm more than happy to help you out! :)

Kindly give her the true dealer cost, lower than the invoice (which doesn't reveal the true cost)... you know, the real one after all the unpublished dealer incentives and the lot storage bonuses, etc, so she can haggle working her way up, rather than down.

OK, so I have test driven a few cars myself and worked out some figures with these sales rats.

All cars include Auto Tranny and A/C:

2009 Honda Civic $22567
2010 Mazda 3 $22974
2009 Subaru Impreza $25576

The all wheel feel of the Impreza was the best plus it the highest HP engine. Still have to check out Hyundai and VW

Edit: These prices all include taxes freight and PDI and all the BS.

2009 model is $15.5 ++. You could probably get the used one for $11.5k cash (save $4k vs new). The used car is still under warranty.

Asumming you take care of it (and it is in good condition to start) - this car will last at least another 5 years; you're looking at under $200/month (before borrowing costs).

if i owned a car i gave a about i would follow this routine for sure; but my all of my piece of cars haven't needed more than a tire rotation and gotten 300,000km out of all of them on 3 oil changes. maybe i'm just lucky

Just when making this choice couldn't become more difficult, I have to ask for all your opinions about another aspect. Front wheel drive versus all wheel drive.

As you all know I was looking at the Subaru Impreza today and test drove the out of it. It was fun. But I heard the repair costs on the drivetrain for an AWD vehicle is double to triple the cost of that of a FWD. Obviously there are benefits to having the AWD drive in the winter for added control but what else may the pros and cons be, and is the AWD v.s. FWD worth shelling out an additional 3.5k for the Impreza?
