Hey Lisa,

The cars I have been looking at used are:

subaru imprezza
honda civic
mazda 3
VW Jetta
Hyundai Elantra

Looking at new

Civic
Mazda 3

Note: there is not one domestic car on that list. I'm going to hit a couple dealerships tomorrow just to grab some brouchures and get some official quotes. That way if my car craps out on me again I can just scap it and buy a car knowing exactly what I'm getting into.

At least look at it this way, at least your not writing finals right now.....imagine how much that would suck....

Avoid used VW (German anything) - nice cars, high operating costs.

Anything Japanese and under 3 years old should be good, but will pay premium. Honda & Toyota tend to fare better than Mazda in the used department.

Hyundai are a good option but only buy if under 24 months old (avoid Korean cars >= 24 months old). I would avoid Kia.

Ford Focus is a great car and should be fine if under 24 months old. With GM & Chrysler problems I would avoid.

Bang for the buck: Hyundai or Ford < 24 months. Parts are plentiful and cheap, resale values (used prices) are reasonable. Over the two I would select Ford.

Most important: whatever you get, maintain it like a SOB. Every 3 months oil (regardless of distance), follow the service schedule exactly and get it Krown'd every fall. It should last you 5+ years (which would amount to a very reasonable $200-$300 / month [before borrowing costs, if any]).

$12.9k - 2008 Ford Focus SES Sedan
http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/deta...64&adid=7337755

2009 model is $15.5 ++. You could probably get the used one for $11.5k cash (save $4k vs new). The used car is still under warranty.

Asumming you take care of it (and it is in good condition to start) - this car will last at least another 5 years; you're looking at under $200/month (before borrowing costs).

I agree, if it's your first car and you are not a VW 'lover'. I, on the other hand, currently have 3 and have owned 3 in the past. All TDI's mind you. The highest operating cost for me in the past 500,000+km's is fuel, if 5ish liters/100km can be called high operating cost :)

$14.9k - 2008 Honda Civic DX Sedan

2009 Civic DX sedan model is $16.9k ++. You're only saving $2k over new cost by going used. 2007 might save you $5k. Either are more expensive than a similarly equipt (better in some ways) Ford Focus Sedan.

So I went on CP24 tonight and asked what was better new or slightly used. I will be on CP24 around 1240 again tonight.

"Iain from Mississauga go ahead"

"Hey George!"

I hate how I sound on the radio/TV.

They said buying new is nice but buying used can also be benefial, no definitve answer.

so i was driving down Eglinton Ave yesterday when boom my car died. I'm not sure what the problem is yet but i have been playing with the idea of buying a new car for some time now, especially with the prices being what they are.

If there is anyone on here that can offer some negotiating advice when going into these dealerships it would be much appriciated.

I know it is wise not to mention that i have a vehicle for trade in until after I have negotiated the lowest price possible, that much I know but any other advice I would once again apprciate.

i'm thinkin of a few cars that have caught my eye.

Honda Civic
Jeep Wrangler
Subaru Imprezza
Toyota Corrola
Mazda 3

I have 20000 cash. Not financing, straigt up cash on the spot. I dont know if that help with the negotiations or not.

Performance with decent cost exchange parts, Honda & Toyota, hands down. Fantastic engines & transmission's.
Subaru, well it's a main purpose is for high performance speedster with great acceleration so maintaince & parts are a bit more expensive. Exceptional engines & powertrains.
Mazda 3? If you have a fat wallet then it's cool. Mazda has the most expensive parts other then the world famous luxury cars.
With 20K cash, probably a 1-2 year old, standard or SE compilation Civic or Corolla or even better depending on how you bargain with dealers.
You must be a confident buyer.
Check the car, drive in pot-holes for testing the suspension, make whacky turns to the right/left so you test the power-steering and axle alignment. Shake the car up and down to observe the shocks. If they bounce just once their great. 2 or more bounces signify adjustment (they aren't cheap for any manufacturer but you can find aftermarkets when contacting your mechanic). Check the color of the engine oil & transmission on cold temperatures. Observe how the tarnsmission changes gears.
When you check these things you can basically set a price and start bargaining with them. You win most the time :D
Ofcourse this is related when buying a used car. Don't think a year old car is brand new. Noone knows how it's be driven and what kind of maintance has been involved.
Trust noone. Your judgement is vital. Don't let them manipulate your ideas as most of these dealers are thieves in the living daylight and wait just for amatuers to arrive.
Good luck :)

I don't know if its been mentioned, but if you are considering a Matrix, go look at the Pontiac Vibe. It is the exact same vehicle, with different sheet cladding, for a few thousand less.

Used Mazda 3 and mazda 6 are also fantastic vehicles.

LOL!

Pretty useless, albeit smart answer (Rogers Media doesn't want to piss off their automotive advertisers and the host knows this). I thought they would have given a better answer.

If I am up at 12:40 I will watch! ;)

Here's giving you an idea with my buying my new used car last spring. I needed a new winter car, and after 12 years with my mini-tank-like Hyundai Accent, I bought another Hyndai, an Elantra this time. They are top-rated best in class by consumer reports as I explained previously. Their resale isn't great compared to Honda or Toyota, but to me as a buyer of a used car, it was an advantage. It's not a head turner of course, but it's a very comfortable car that serves it purpose well.

To sum it up, in 2008 I got a loaded '2003 Hyundai Elantra with only 47k for $7500+tx, cash. That's it. It's a very reliable and economical car that will last me for the next 8+ years, for a rediculously low price, with very low maintenence. I've only needed to do oil changes since I bought it last April :)

I've decided to start look at Hyundai. I saw a fully loaded Sonota 2009 with auto trans and 20k kms with sunrook and leather interior for 17995. Not too shabby at all. I would definatly take the car for a test drive.
