It's so ugly though!! lol But then again, as a student, I'm caring less about what it looks like and more about how to save costs, and still drive a reliable/safe car.

Consumer Reports ranks the Hyundai Elantra #1 in all of the above, within your budget.

Heheh, Fusion.
Also, Consumer Reports is the biggest pile of in circulation today. How can anybody possibly take seriously a publication that has rated two cars, which are the SAME CAR mechanically, with a different badge, poor and then good? Example: Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon. Same car, built in the same plant, and yet one is great and the other sucks. CR is written by 80 year olds, as far as I'm concerned.
Owner forums are far, far better for real information. Forget anything you buy in a bookstore.
As for the Yaris, well uh...
No thanks.
Under $20k: Civic, Corolla, Mazda3.
The Matrix is a good choice as well. It's basically a Corolla hatch, built on the same line here in Cambridge. I know a ton of people that work at the plant and they all say they'd definitely buy what they build, if they don't already own one.
As for insurance, shop around. Every single company is out to you, don't think otherwise. They're all bloodsucking pieces of and I hate them all.

Consumer Reports never failed me. Though there are some good forums and boards, I would prefer data gathered professionally from professionals who make it easy to read and understand. I believe this is Lisa the customer. She's not a tuner-chick who cares about all the little specs.

lol I definitely value Cale's opinion, but I think sometimes he can get too excited about the fine details, and forgets that when I'm buying electronics (and now a car), I'm very much a simpleton and only care about the basics. Haha

Honnestly, most cars nowadays are very reliable and get the job done, you have to test drive many cars and pick the ones you enjoy the most... make a top 3, then decide which one is better for you.
Everyone on these boards is an expert :toothless

Ya, I was thinking of checking out all the cars that were listed in this thread and narrowing it down from there to see which I'd like to test drive.
