When I get excited about something, I usually say yes to the first price, what tips do you have for negotiated prices?

The best tip is knowing the wholesale of a used vehicle. Find out if you can what they go for at the auction. As a rule of thumb the dealers usually inflate the price by 2-3K from the wholesale value. In my mind and experience shaving 1.5K off the sticker price should be effortless (on a car that's marked @~20K). First bargain on a financing price, then when you get that price down, offer them cash and drop the price even further. Albeit, this may not always work...

As has been mentioned get a CARPROOF instead of CARFAX report. Also, a general rule - don't trust used car salesmen :)

I've been actively searching for a car for the past two months and the above are the conclusions I have reached.

On the topic at hand, anyone have any tips for bringing a car over from Quebec both as a private sale as well as from a dealership?

Quebec is not a different country, never heard of anything to be done for bringing a car over.

why are you looking to buy a car from here anyways?? don't tell me those old skylines.

Don't buy a car from Quebec here EVER. Have you seen me drive? lol

Seriously now... Really, don't buy a car from Quebec from here in Ontario. They are much cheaper at auction, and the car repair history is not provided by the mandatory Ontario used car transfer package. Winters are longer, and more salt is used on the roads causing more wear on your car. These are the reasons why identical Quebec cars ar sold for 10% less than Ontarian cars.

But... bringing a new car over... no issues at all. There is a mandatory safety inspection, even if it's a brand new car. It's just a tax grab really.

we use less salt than before, and cars destined to Canada are better treated for that type of corrosion.

actually some car brands sold in southern states should not be imported to canada at all, they are more prone to corrosion because of the metal alloy used.

The main reason is lack of availability here in Ontario. I'm looking for a manual 3rd generation TL that both fits my budget and has decent kilometres and well, there are none of those here. Several in Quebec though. I've tried auction to no avail :(

Is there a way to be exempt from paying QST when buying from a dealer? It's a non-issue when buying privately, as I just get the owner to bring the car into Ontario and register it here. Would the same work with a dealer though?

Salt I'm not too worried about, I can look at the car before I buy it. I can CARPROOF the car is well.

I agree, if it's your first car and you are not a VW 'lover'. I, on the other hand, currently have 3 and have owned 3 in the past. All TDI's mind you. The highest operating cost for me in the past 500,000+km's is fuel, if 5ish liters/100km can be called high operating cost :)

Wow...

That's the compete opposite of mine..

But yah once you own one, you can't ever enjoy another car as much...

I'm on my third...

Well, I will enjoy that E320 CDI/Bluetec once I get my hands on one... soon I hope.
