As you all know I was looking at the Subaru Impreza today and test drove the out of it. It was fun. But I heard the repair costs on the drivetrain for an AWD vehicle is double to triple the cost of that of a FWD. Obviously there are benefits to having the AWD drive in the winter for added control but what else may the pros and cons be, and is the AWD v.s. FWD worth shelling out an additional 3.5k for the Impreza?

lol like you said the Impreza does have the most HP and torque but what's the point when you drive 90 on a 100? :P

Anyways Imprezas are solid vehicles, I know few people with them and they all love it, they usually don't break down. Also there's a big Subaru club for enthusiasts where you can get discounts for group buys, meet people with the same car to hear problems with cars or anything, or if you wanna get something fixed there's people that would give you discounts and really know Impreza engines. Give me a call tomorrow if you wanna know more.

Just some tips.

1) Buy used ofcourse.
2) If buying new never buy a first year model since it almost always has bugs.
3) There is no need to buy Toyota or jap/korean cars because they last longer and are more durable. Ford is just as good right now if not better with their options. Chrysler/GM are iffy since the government will only back the warranty for one year.
4) IF buying used, depending on the mileage, 50,000+ do a Pressure Test to make sure your engine is still tight.
5) Look around as much as possible, there are deals EVERYWHERE.
6)A new option, is buying online. A friend of mine bought a jaguar S type with 20,000 km on it from EBAY almost 2 years ago. Amazing deal. Has no problems and is fully covered.
7) Buy used.

:) If I think of more I will post.

I was automotive engineer for GM for a bit, and also bought a used Grand am a year ago.

Okay I think we've narrowed it down to 5 options:

1. Toyota Corolla
2. Ford Focus
3. Hyundi Elantra
4. Nissan Sentra
5. Mitsubishi Lancer

Funny you bring out the Focus... This is a pic of the one I rented in Vegas a few weeks ago, and I was surprised by its pep. Negative observations I had is that it's a bit crammed inside, and the worst is the blind spots are terrible, but other than that it was very economical on gas.

I too have been toying with the idea of the Nissan Sentra. I think I'm going to contact a dealership tomorrow to discuss.

Ford Focus is cool. I designed the Intake Manifold for it; well one of the product engineers.
Plus they have the Sync technology with Microsoft, can't go wrong.

Oh, I forgot to mention the Honda Civic. The service at the dealership here was pretty bad though, and I don't like bad service!

ford has been impressing me a lot lately.. was interested in the fusion awd, but the price tag put me off

after 3 weeks of purchasing the impreza, i'm very happy w/ it, and would definitely recommend it!
