I think the projections for medals don't come from populations but they are based on how many athletes a country sends.
Top ten medal count and the amount of athletes they send in.
USA - 215 - 24 medals
Germany - 153 - 18 medals
Norway - 99 - 12 medals
Canada - 206 - 9 medals
Korea - 46 - 9 medals
Austria - 81 - 8 medals
Russia - 199 - 8 medals
France - 108 - 8 medals
Switzerland - 146 - 7 medals
Sweden - 106 - 6 medals
Obviously the more events you participate in the more chances you have of winning.
USA has an advantage over other countries because they have crap load of money. Their athletes do not have to work at rona or canadian tire just to pay for their equipment. There is just no comparing any country to the US. Possibly China will eventually concentrate in the Winter Games like they did the summer games and USA can get some competition.
I hear Russians are freaking out over their showing because they are hosting the games next and they are having a horrible olympics thus far. worse than Canada. They should be right up there for the medal count but they are not.
Based on the number of athletes Canada should be in the top 5 and they are. Norway is always good in winter and they seem to send athletes to sports that they are guaranteed to place in. Lots of cross country athletes.
Korea is killing it in speed skating and have a surprising amount of medals for a country that doesn't have snow. |

Millions of our tax dollars went to the "own the podium" program to level the playing field for our athletes for this exact reason. YOU, me, my parents, etc etc have paid money out of our pockets so that these athletes don't have to work these ty jobs to survive. We've given them the final resources necessary for an equal shot at winning medals. |

i would be interested in seeing the numbers.
i mean i have a feeling that if canada spends millions, USA spends billions. you can't fight that.
edit: from what i also understand is that in the US, you don't go if you don't have a sponsor. which can offer a lot more than 117 million divided between 206 athletes. |

Too many goddam penalties.
Any high ranking Olympic team is gonna score on at least a few of the 8 or so chances they get on the powerplay. |

You need ice to skate, not snow. It get's cold in Korea....they also have snow.
Who trains for speed skating on outdoor ice rinks anyway? |

| Lets face it...Canadians buckle under pressure. The good thing about the Canada vs USA hockey game is that I won $100.00. |

Yes and part of this own the podium thing is there is a rule that they can't train with any other athlete from another country which I really think has hindered more than helped. |

If by "buckle under pressure" you mean they dominated the game and Ryan Miller stole it because he's in' great; then yes, they "buckled." |
