I don't mean to be rude but why are their a couple of people from across the border trying to debate in a thread where we Canadians were simply wanting to pat ourselves on the back and dabble in a little bit of Nationalism? IMO it's something we greatly lack.
WTF. Let us have our fun. We had more than one media outlet bash our Country in the past few weeks and as far as I know, we haven't fired back at all. We let our success do the talking. It seems to me that there seems to be a bit of international sour grapes goin on here. Probably because everyone got used to the quiet, unasssuming nation of Canada.
I'm sorry but I've seen and heard more than my share of American grand standing and I actually think it rubs some the wrong way to see Canada succeed like this. It's like we're the ugly step sister that has thrown off her coke bottle glasses and shed her baggy clothes only to reveal a smokin body with a saweeet face.
Like I told my husband last night, we're like the chick from that movie She's All That. Nobody would have guessed but now they know!! :D :D |

you are right...we should all be happy for how well our countries athletes performed in these games....but I do have to point out again that the USA is number two for overall winter olympic medals so you have always been as competitive in the winter as you have the summer olympics.
:D |
haha ok ok, just seems like we win a load of medals in the summer. |

Jesus christ, cant people just be happy on how well BOTH our countries did and shut the hell up?
BOTH countries won the most medals ever in their countries respective histories! Thats AWESOME.
Canada did well in their home country, and the USA did well in the winter games, which they have not always been *as* competitive in, as opposed to summer.
We should be happy that both of our countries are making progress and giving us games worth cheering about!! :p
Jeff: I see your point, but please can we NOT talk about population ALL over again for the sake of our sanity? Please refer back a few pages.... |

its all good sweetheart, I take zero offense when people run out of intelligent things to say and, to cover for it, make a failed attempt at insulting instead. Unfortunately for him, he looks like a bigger idiot than anyone ;) :) You guys rock and I would never put "All Canadians" and this dude in the same category...I know better ;)
haha true, ok ok I get what you are saying. I came out wrong, but, as I used to "live" up there, I often debate both sides in defense of two places I care for.
This is not a political statement by any means: I love when things like last night happen and Canada truly appreciates that they have an amazing country with great people! It happens WAY too often that I hear some Canadians spend more energy on what the US is doing as opposed to concentrating on what they have themselves :) You have a great thing going on up there, why waste energy?
Of course the game itself left a bitter taste for me, but, as a person with strong ties to Canada, I could not be more proud of your country as a whole last night :) And thus, my frustration (not sensitivity) to the endless negative energy to what everybody else is doing. Its just silly and a waste of time, becuase it wont change anything.
Sorry for the rolled eyes, but I ended up wasting my OWN time in these debates, playing both sides of the fence, and I think the burned American flag pic and the personal digs comment was worthy of those faces ;) :)
Congrats to Canada and a job well done :) :) |
um sorry, a couple people, or one dude? Dont forget, that there is one American here being a piss pot and one who is proud of you guys ;)
Lets not make another "OH MY OD THE AMERICANS" comment, please. There are hundreds of you and one guy talking . Im sure you can take him! LOLOL |

Because we all know that population totals determine the country with the greatest athletes...hence the reason Jamacian's Usain Bolt is the best runner in the world.
:nervous:
:haha: |
Size and funding absolutely influence the winter Olympics. That's why you don't see really poor countries being able to compete; equipment and training is expensive for winter sports. |

As if Putin's remarks weren't enough....

Updated: March 1, 2010, 9:11 AM ET
Associated Press
MOSCOW -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is demanding that sports officials step down over the country's dismal performance at the Vancouver Olympics.
Russia, a traditional winter sports powerhouse, won just 15 medals -- with only three golds -- in one of its worst performances. Officials said before the games that 40 medals and a top-three finish in the medal standings was the target.
Russia placed 11th for golds and sixth in the overall medal count.
In televised comments, Medvedev said Monday that those responsible for preparing the athletes "must have the courage to step down." He did not mention anyone by name.

boring talk: There is a cultural aspect as well. Hockey is a part of our culture, just as figure skating is for Russia and skating, skiing, curling for Norway, etc
There's also the geographic location variable as well. Thank God Australia is so far down south, they would dominate the Winter Olympics too :p |
