Disco influencing or even being sampled in current house music does not mean disco is coming back.
You see the same thing in a lot of different areas aside from music. Some fashions that were popular in the 70s, 80s, or whenever have become popular again recently. They're called fads. That doesn't mean that "they're back." |

I think that it's worth considering that throughout history, there has been plenty of pretty famous examples of artists of all kinds who were derided, slighted and generally dissed for doing something they truly felt, and which most people just didn't get at that moment, or that felt so hopelessly out of step with the times. Yet what's most interesting is that in a number of cases, some went on to become icons and legends. They stood their ground because they had a vision. Even if it radically clashed with what everyone else thought and liked.
There is no question that like him or not, someone like TP is eliciting a lot of reactions from many everywhere, and maybe there is some value to this rather than mere indifference. It does mean something that people would be so passionately hating or loving him.
To me at least, it also points out to how homogenized everything has become, and how few people are ever willing to think outside the box, many times because it is a form of tribal affiliation, and they like what their friends like so that they can use this to build up social connections. 'Belonging to the group' is very important, and those artists that challenge this will do poorly in an environment where the customary expectations are challenged.
In this sense this thread is good as it helps people even become aware that such a phenomenon exists in the first place, as long as they are willing to admit that we all somehow harbor cultural prejudices. And even if ultimately rewarding, that it's extremely difficult if not downright impossible to have an open mind when we are constantly bombarded with so many subtle messages to conform, belong, and not stick out.
Surely TP's press agent must be happy that there is that much controversy and buzz about him.
But to me what's most important in the end is that it highlights the idea that certain artists are after timelessness rather than seeking the trendy thrill of the moment.
Time will tell who becomes a legend most. This thread will be interesting to revisit in 20 years. |
