Knuckles is actually pretty entertaining, but with a style of his own, and which is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Very steady, smooth, effortlessly letting the music speak. And consistent, tasteful selections not stuck in the past.
While arguably not spectacular or full of pyrotechnics, it's very interesting to listen to DJs who have this self-effacing style as it actually allows for more things to come out of the speakers on their own rather than forcing it, they have a gentleness about them which in the right setting can make the party really enjoyable.
It also helps to remember that Frankie's best nights have always been playing for a gay or very mixed crowd. The straight crowd doesn't quite get certain things the same way. Which is the same with Vasquez, Tenaglia and a number of others. |
I go to plenty of gay and mixed parties. I typically cannot stand the energy of a so called 'straight' party, where women are constantly harassed by men and the floor is filled with little bubbles of insecure shuffling and awkward, alcohol-induced courtship. I like mixed parties because all of the dancers are in it together as equals, and the crowd is generally more conscientious and fun-loving. Also I try to check out all of the garage reunions, body & soul, etc, etc. Not really the scene it used to be (from what I understand as a young person having recently discovered it many years later), but if body and soul is the closest I can get now to the energy of the garage, I'll take it!
That said I much prefer the drama of a larry levan set. An all night set at a wild party is not an occasion to be self effacing IMO.
But for what it's worth when I say he's the most boring to me of the old school of DJs, that still makes him one of the best ever in my book :p
seriously though, of the older djs, who is more boring? (in their heyday, not presently)
yes you can call me a TP fanboy, along with a handful of others: chiefly Larry Levan (RIP) and David Mancuso, and to a lesser degree DJ Spinna, Terre Thaemlitz, Juju & Jordash, Tony Humpheries, i:Cube, DJ Harvey, Mr Scruff, and Dam-Funk. I wouldn't miss a party by those guys for anything. Most of these guys really make the night special - a journey full of vitality and drama and good good music. I used to put Francois K in this list too, but ever since he developed an obsession with dubstep, I have not enjoyed his sets. Can't stand that stuff.
Theo definitely has something unique going on though of all of these. You guys would say that this essence that makes him unique is exactly what you dislike, but it's what makes him brilliant in my book. I love the way he destroys and jams together - I find it thrilling. |

| nefardec are you familiar with Dj Garth at all? Saw him and harvey a couple of times this summer back to back and Garth was superior on both occassions. |

I know he used to be a resident at Fly, one of the gay village's last big spaces, and he's always booked for Pride, but beyond that...
I've always been impressed that Michael went from DJing raves in Saskatoon to being one of the Guvernment's residents (even though I'm not a fan of the venue) - he's an immensely talented and versatile DJ, even if his music selection isn't necessarily my thing.
+1 on mixed venues/parties, btw - most predominantly straight clubs are bastions of the kind of insecurity that has Zyklon Jay complaining about Deko-ze playing with his shirt off. :p |

Haha never seen that one. One of my friends who lives in Toronto told me "you know he's getting really into the set when the shirt comes off." That seems a bit ridiculous to me. Anybody have the video of M.I.K.E. all ed up and shirtless singing along to the wrong lyrics of a Coldplay song? |

my favourite club in the world is also one of the most gay/mixed...and one of the only ones in which it is pulled off well...that deko z comment has nothing to do with his gayness as much as his love for playing really cheesy music.
You know as well as i do, that the no shirt thing is not for the ladies...same thing with morales:p |
