I saw Dubfire about 6 months ago and while I thought it was rather boring, it was more due to the track selection rather than the actual technical ability which seemed fine.
I saw him in April, yeah very poor song programming, not to say that the songs he played were terrible, just absolutely no flow whatsoever... every 20 minutes he'd play out this 3 minute long intro or rediculous breakdown after playing a peak time track and totally kill the mood. When I pay $45 to go see a 4 hour set, I expect more then solid technical ability. I don't want the mood killed, I don't wanna have to go sit down... to me, programming and sequencing and reading the crowd is more important then supremely technical turntablists or whatever.
His opening act, Carlo Lio, blew him out of the water that night.

I think the average Dubfire set's quality went down ever since he started to play his fail blend of techno and copy Richie Hawtin right down to the short sleeved black V-neck shirts.
Playing minimal/techno is a lot harder than the other EDM genres, because music programming and track selection plays a much bigger role in delivering entertainment to the audience.
Any DJ can grab the Beatport top 10 for house or trance, beatmatch them together and deliver a decent experience for the crowd, but you can't do that with techno. Thats what sets aparts guys like Hawtin and Vath from their imitators.

That's a good point. Tech/minimal is so subtle that just using the sync button can't get the crowd into it. It's all about programming.
Trance used to be that way, before every aspiring DJ decided that ASOT and the like were what a live set was supposed to sound like, instead of seeing them as the track showcases they are.
(However, Armin's live sets could be a little more uplifting. It's sort of ridiculous that he plays a constant stream of pretty, uplifting tracks on ASOT and then plays a lot of house-style stuff live)

Markus Schulz is technically one of the best dj's i've seen, not many risk and track selection sometimes can be very uninspiring but his beatmatching is really flawless and mixes between phrases really well, knows how to make an energetic set and keep the energy till the end.
Worst dj has to be Laidback Luke, worst than many local djs that play for 2 beers.
