And seriously, you people need to stop making these comparisons between Parrish and high-brow institutions such as Picasso, Russolo and Cage. Especially if you're then going to pull the no-such-thing-as-high-art postmodernism when people call you pretentious. I don't see you comparing him to videogame developers or comic book artists in the spirit of postmodern cultural equality. |
Why isn't what Theo doing 'highbrow'? Is it because he's a black man?
|
The cat was in the bag, until this point, right here. He may have been squirming around a little but not until it was intimated, however jokingly or not, that SYSTEM-J's opinion of Parrish was influenced by race, did the discussion descend into eighth grade, off-color (pun intended), humor. Of course topics involving Theo Parrish come with extra baggage because it's difficult to reconcile his professed racial prejudice with the concept of him as an artist.
On that level, however, most if not all of the jokes are directed at Parrish's bigotry, as yet only very indirectly addressed and relatively free from a more thorough drill-down, have yet to cross that threshold of actual bigotry; while remaining relatively satirical to the point of self-deprecation in effigy to the racist stereotypes of one's own culture. Hence, when you have people behaving as moronic red-necks, they are behaving that way because it's funny to satirize Parrish's bigotry by embracing the stereotypes which constitute the bigots present in their own culture - which they deplore equally if not more-so than Parrish's racism-lite - and they are not doing it in order to portray/project/broadcast/indicate/et al a more deleterious racial identity of their own which seeks to cast aspersions and/or put down another race's ethnic identity.
It is therefor not racial intolerance. Claiming that it is, is certainly tempting when the person you're defending has no other points to stand his defense on. It would seem to impugn the perception of his detractors with a comical combination of poisonous-well and straw-man fallacies. Unfortunately, all you really have is an argument-negating cliche' the response to which, somewhat perversely, validates Parrish's own racism. |

This was expert SYSTEM-J trolling on my part. It follows several arguments we've had in the past. At first I didn't think he'd go for it, but then the 'moronic rednecks' caught on to the trail.

I really think you are giving some of the posters here too much credit.
The attitudes towards black musicians espoused by people here time and time again is to cast doubt upon their importance relative to non-black musicians, to insinuate that their blackness (that is culture, not genetic make up) has little to do with their artistic production/performance and little to do with the production/performance of music on a larger scale, and the net effect is to negate the cultural contribution that black musicians have made. The same has also been done with gay culture in this very thread.
It amounts to intellectual genocide.
The underlying attitude is that those cultures are inferior to that of the deniers.

Perhaps... just perhaps, it had little or nothing to do with race or sexuality at all. |

This whole passage is a terrible argument. Saying that black musicians' being black has little to do with their artistic production/performance does not negate the cultural contribution that black musicians have made whatsoever.
"The net effect" is the conclusion that you drew from what people said, which doesn't necessarily make it so. "The underlying attitude" is equally troubling, as it appears that you're insinuating that people were suggesting that white musicians are better than black musicians, which I certainly don't remember seeing anywhere in this thread until your supposition of it just now.
It really seems like you're drawing misguided conclusions to fit your wanting to use the race card in defense of TP. |

You're both expert trolls and to look at this thread one would be hard pressed not to find indications of trolling from all sides. Half the racist rabble in here is trolling, along with the indignation over it. Some of it may, in fact, portray an individual's actual position on whatever matter said trolling pertains to but it doesn't negate the fact that it's trolling; nor does the fact that it's trolling negate its veracity.

You had me until this little hyperbolic gem, not with any belief in unfair denunciation of black/gay contributions, but that there was a belief in some common foundation necessary for discussion. Now, the thread sits on Godwin's event horizon, awaiting the feathery tickle of other loaded phrases like historically revisionist eugenics or racially hermetic musical totalism.
*crosses fingers and watches thread to see if multi-faceted, nuanced trolling sticks* |

I think it is possible that compliments about your literary technique have caused you to become preoccupied with writing blog-worthy posts (self-defeating effort getmi) |

Quiet that poisonous, mocking quill, etching upon the heart of my very being. Sure to come are the comparisons, already echoing through my memory like resonant laughter, to Edward Bulwer-Lytton as you make more shriller my despair. |

I'm gay and I'm curious how anyone found really anything in this thread offensive?
Nobody was outwardly homophobic.....?
EDIT: And really, is it even possible to be homophobic when you browse a trance forum?
That's like going to a gay bar and being pissed off because there's all these homosexuals there. |

Is this still supposed to be trolling, or have we outright pulled the race card (with a genocide kicker, no less) now?
It seemed to me you couldn't get why gay black people don't automatically like "soulful", "energetic" music, which I found pretty troubling. You protest altogether too much about race, and it seems pretty obvious why. |
