On the whole Theo being a good DJ thing...
Though I would personally never agree with Avana in the notion that tight mixing is a sign of insecurity, this argument comes down to taste. I've seen the man twice and I think he killed both times. I'm also very sure some people hated it.
But the thing is when you're gonna see Theo play, you're not there for tight beats to get lost in on drugs, it's more of a journey through music. I've seen him put close to an hour of relatively tight mixed acid house/techno brutalities, but I'm not there exclusively for that and I know it. I know some people just don't get into it, or they think if you're spinning you should find some way or another mix your records so they don't sound too harsh together or whatever. I get it. I think when I'm seeing someone like Theo or Moody, though, it becomes more about what's going on with the music that's being played and the mixing it's just for fun.
edit: By the way, regarding that last sentence, that's never to say the transitions can't be/have powerful moments too. |

ehhh ...
that's not what i believe. it's not insecurity, it's that a lot of people have a narrow idea about what's good deejaying, because their music all sounds the same and they have no other way to excel at deejaying it than to play it that way. I seriously doubt anyone's like "oh , my music sucks, so i better keep it tight'. No, rather the thought is 'my music is ing awesome', but the only possible way to deal with it is to mix it in that long tight seamless way because it affords no other creative possibilities. that kind of mixing has its place, but the end result is boring if it's done over and over again. it's not about taste, it's about variety.
Even if very different two things can taste delicious, they each kind of suck if you eat them every day for a week. |

This I would completely agree with. When you are paying to see someone like Theo with an intensely eclectic bag and usual set structure it's kind of like you know there are risks of wrecks because the dj'ing becomes a lot more emotional than technical. I'm completely fine with it, some people (like Garth for example) aren't.
I can dig both. I can get into a really smooth techno set if done right and I can also get into Theo slamming Marvin Gaye into Adonis or something. Both have their merits IMHO.

well not really, but it is relative to what you're playing.
in any case, i feel that before any technical mastery the most important part of deejaying is always programming and inspiration. to me, technique can never improve a poorly programmed or uninspired set. something about polishing and turds.
@wotyzoid - re: smooth techno set. yeah, I love a good techno set. for instance something like Rob Hood's grey area mix. but even in that set there are a variety of techniques, and the programming is excellent. |

Thing is, Armin technically is a fantastic DJ. He doesn't play what you want to hear anymore but you can't on his mixing skills. |
