New York? It might not all be my cup of tea, but in the 90's New York House DJ's had a huge sound that was very influential to some people that make house music today. That scene was very much supported by the gay community, and I would hardly call it handbag crap. Some of the best prog nights albeit more on the "tribal" side of things happened in gay clubs for the 2000's. Victor Calderone can play a hell of a party, gays generally loved him.

If you're referring to the kind of music played at 90s circuit parties, you're talking about a rather niche aspect of gay clubbing.
Reference clubs like Limelight (NYC) and Industry (Toronto) in the 1990s to see how nights with solid music and very mixed crowds were done proper. |

i wouldn't exactly call MSN a 'mixed' party, though it's certainly more mixed than some. it's pretty much your straight european tourist and/or RA hipster crowd. a couple of cool gays attend regularly. There's usually like 2-3 black people.

Very true. Basically they just play top40 campy dance tracks.
I guess as LGBT people have become more integrated into society there is less of a subversive or independent music scene. What I don't get is that underground disco, which was in origin gay, black music, having such emotional highs and visceral, soul and funk based dance rhythms, has been supplanted by such emotionally vapid and standardized tracks.

Usually, yes, but that particular week was advertised as such, and I doubt very much you would have debated it.
