| what a ing shocking start to the campaign, not enough players play for the shirt, Robson has NO say in who he can go for, apparently its people upstairs that want Rooney, we need a ing defence!! :( |

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Robson but it is clear his hands are tied. Freddy Shepherd should either back him or sack him. At the moment Bobby is taking the blame for everything but we all know it's Shepherd who has gone all out for Rooney when we should be going all out for a defender. Yet it was Bobby who had to walk out on Barrack Road and justify it to the public. When you look at the quality we have and the way we are playing we should have a lot more than 2 points, everything comes back to our shambolic defending.
Not only is our defence poor but Newcastle are a team that just don't do defending, it's almost seen as something to be ashamed of, like we'd rather lose 5-0 throwing caution to the wind than scrape a 1-0 victory. I remember Craig Bellamy speaking a while ago about the attacking mentality of the club. I've never seen Newcastle defend properly in my lifetime, it's probably why we've won nothing in my lifetime.
NUFC.com wrote the following piece on today's events:
| quote: | You don't know what you're doing
That's usually a phrase reserved for referees but just as easily applied to the entire staff of Newcastle United Football Club; Chairman, Manager and players let's tar them all with the same, sorry, brush.
The shambles that unfolded at Villa Park had to be seen to be believed. Alan Shearer left on the bench, Kieron Dyer not in the 16, Stephen Carr captain, Lee Bowyer down the right, all decisions that had their own merits but are collectively symptomatic of a club in total disarray.
While our Chairman kids himself that Wayne Rooney could be interested in a move to Tyneside, his Manager presided over a rabble that couldn't defend to save their lives.
Ironically, referee Mike Riley also contributed to the farce with an error of Andy D'Urso proportions.
When Craig Bellamy charged in on goal and ex-mackem Sorensen handled out of his box there was only one possible decision. It's an automatic sending-off whether he has prevented a goalscoring opportunity or not. Ask Jussi Jaaskelainen who was red-carded at Bolton a few years ago for simply losing his bearings. Have the laws changed?
At that point we were leading 2-1.
From then on we capitulated to a degree that was even extraordinary for Newcastle, leaving fans bemused and frustrated.
Where do we go from here? Who knows? Something has to give soon. |

| what is with Shearer not playing? |

Shearer has been poor not only for the last few games, but pre-season and the end of last season. He still has it in him to lead the line and score goals but he needs to be rested more often. With Kluivert nearing full fitness we could afford to drop Shearer. Bellamy is impossible to drop in his current form, 5 goals in his last 7 games and he should have had one at Villa had Sorensen not handled outside his box. I think Kluivert and Bellamy is the way forward with Shearing making a fair number of games to get the best out of him. Kluivert was impressive against Villa, got himself a well taken goal and that was his first full game in months so I think there is more to come from him.
Interestingly the Villa game was 5 years to the day since Ruud Gullit's last ever game with us, that stormy night when he dropped Shearer for the home game against Sunderland. We lost 2-1 and Gullit was gone in a couple of days. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens to Bobby, although I'm not sure Freddy Shepherd has the guts to sack one of football's legends.
I honestly don't think Bobby has any backing from the chairman. Just who exactly is running this team? |

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed Newcastle have made enquiries about defender Bobo Balde but insists the former Toulouse man is going nowhere.
Speaking after his side's 1-0 win over Old Firm rivals Rangers, O'Neill insisted the current squad is too small to lose anyone, especially someone as key as Balde.
O'Neill said: "They (Newcastle) made inquiries about him but we don't want anything to happen, Bobo is too important for us and we are a couple of hours away from the transfer deadline.
"Today, in terms of numbers, we need to build the squad up because we are a bit stretched."
Newcastle, along with Chelsea, have also been linked with Rangers defender Jean-Alain Boumsong.
Light Blues manager Alex McLeish is desperate to keep the defender and warned that anyone wishing to sign Boumsong would have to break the bank.
McLeish said: "I wouldn't think anybody concerned with Rangers would like that to happen.
"He is a quality player and it is right that he has attracted interest from people with money but they better have a lot."
Since the departure of Jonathan Woodgate to Real Madrid for £13.4million Newcastle have been involved in a bidding war with Manchester United for Wayne Rooney.
The Red Devils are tipped to capture the young Everton striker but Newcastle's poor start to the season suggests the money would be better spent on a centre-back.
Bobby Robson's side currently languish in 16th place in the Barclays Premiership having conceded nine goals in just four games.

Newcastle are going to have to do something with only a couple of days left. IMO if we dont sign a defender we really are doomed.
Mid table this season for Newcastle :( |

Robson has been sacked.
It was inevitable really, his hands were tied, he wasn't given the freedom to do the job properly and the results haven't gone our way this season. The media, too, has had a significant role to play in all of this, with ruthless attacks on the club all summer which have turned it into something of a soap opera. To quote Shay Given, "people have stopped watching Eastenders, now they are watching Newcastle".
I think it was a decision which should have been made this summer, as now he has had the indignity of being sacked after a poor start, and we have a search on for a replacement manager who will take time to settle with the new players, time we don't have.
Robson has turned this club around since taking control. He is one of the legends of football, doing his best at 71 years old to win trophies for the club he supported as a boy, and it's sad to see him go. But sadly he failed to sort out our eternal defensive problems and we still haven't won any trophies since 1969. Football is all Bobby has in his life, he lives and breathes the game and even at 71 he is one of the most passionate managers you will find. |

I'm personally sad to see Robson go :( I hope he can get a job elsewhere and still be around the Premiership, who knows, maybe Southampton?
The question is, who do we now bring in? |

End of an era:
SACKED
Statement released by Newcastle United at 10am on Monday 30th August 2004:
AFTER a disappointing start to the Barclays Premier League season, the Directors of Newcastle United have informed Sir Bobby Robson that they have decided that he is to be replaced as Team Manager.
The Directors of Newcastle United wish to place on record their thanks for the way in which Sir Bobby has worked tirelessly over the past five years to try and bring success to the club. There is no hesitation by the club in recording its sincere appreciation for the way in which Sir Bobby has handled team affairs during that five year spell which has seen a significant turnaround in the club's fortunes.
The club agreed, early in 2003, to extend Sir Bobby's contract by one further season. However, after careful consideration, the club decided it was in the best interests of all concerned to re-visit that decision.
The club continues to have the greatest respect and admiration for Sir Bobby and his lifelong achievements both at home, abroad and particularly at the club he has supported since a boy, his beloved Newcastle United.
He leaves having remodeled the Newcastle team with many young players admired and coveted across the UK and Europe. The club will no doubt continue to benefit from the knowledge and experience he has given during his time here. |
