| Seeing as Desailly was released on a free and has no contract with a club, what would you all think if we were to sign him. Even if it was till the end of the season it would give us more options in defence. |

I'd consider Desailly as cover in case of an injury crisis but he is very slow these days and gets turned way too easily, Shearer and Ameobi both made a fool of him back in April.
O'Brien and Hughes are both too weak at centre back, we are very susceptible to crosses and corners without Speed or Woodgate. I noticed the new team photo for this season and young Steven Taylor is big and looks pretty stocky, I wonder if he's any good in the air. We certainly lack that physical presence in central defence. We have nothing to lose in giving Taylor his chance now, we've conced 9 goals in 4 games. People say it could scupper his development throwing him into a side in disarray but it could be better for him, and he's seen as a big prospect according to managers who have worked with him like Tony Adams and David Platt. He's been injured the last few weeks (what's new) but I really hope to see him make a breakthrough this season and be our defensive saviour.
Here's the 04/05 squad photo, taken before Bobby Robson was sacked but after the Woodgate sale. Taylor is in the centre on the back row:

Rumour has it that Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld and Brazil and Portugal manager Phil Scolari are interested. Shepherd said "We have been swamped with interest from some of the best managers in the game, which is not surprising as this is one of the top eight managerial jobs in the world. We are taking our time and won´t be rushed", but we can't believe a word Shepherd says. It has also been on sky sports that Terry Venables is favourite to land the job!
If it is true that Hitzfeld and Scolari are interested and Freddy goes for Venables then Freddy is taking the piss and has to go. |

From the Journal:

Newcastle United are considering applications from four of world football's most respected coaches as the race to replace to Sir Bobby Robson gathers pace.
World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari heads an impressive list of candidates after representatives acting on behalf of Portugal's Euro 2004 boss contacted Magpies officials yesterday.
But it is understood chairman Freddie Shepherd and his board are still seeking to appoint a British manager following the decision to dismiss Robson earlier this week.
Scolari, Argentinian Hector Cuper, Dutchman Dick Advocaat and highly-rated former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld have all expressed an interest in the vacancy at St James's Park during the last 48 hours.
And Shepherd is refusing to rule out any of those coaches who are keen to inherit Robson's legacy despite Newcastle's precarious position near the foot of the Premiership table.
However, the feeling within the board room is that United will be best served by a homegrown manager capable of both relating to, and instilling discipline in, a predominantly youthful squad in urgent need of direction.
Should such an individual prove elusive then all four of the leading foreign candidates are renowned for their hard-line approach and Scolari, in particular, has a track record of dealing with troublesome individuals in his own inimitable style. The Dutch-born manager dropped Romario from Brazil's squad prior to the 2002 World Cup in the face of fierce criticism but still returned to South America with the trophy.
One United player hoping former Rangers boss Advocaat's application is unsuccessful is close-season signing Patrick Kluivert. The Dutch international never made it off Holland's bench with Advocaat at the helm during Euro 2004 and it is unlikely the two would enjoy a close working relationship on Tyneside.
Cuper's case will surely be founded on his reputation as a supreme tactician, but it is doubtful Newcastle fans would take kindly to his trademark defensive style. The South American will no doubt be aware of the Magpies' failings at the back, but appointing the former Real Mallorca, Valencia and Inter Milan coach would represent a huge gamble.
Hitzfeld, of the four leading foreign candidates, is the most intriguing candidate, and the 55-year-old German is well known to favour a move abroad.
The Premiership would provide one of Europe's most widely respected managers with an exciting new platform.
"We are flattered by the interest in the vacant manager's position," admitted a source close to the board.
"We are currently considering a number of applications and we are not ruling anyone in or out."
Although Shepherd and his fellow board members are under pressure to appoint Robson's successor sooner rather than later, they are well aware a hasty decision could prove disastrous.
And it is understood club officials have set an internal deadline of Monday to confirm the identity of the new man at the St James's Park helm.
On the domestic front, Aston Villa's former Leeds boss David O'Leary is among those understood to be interested in the post, but Bolton have followed Birmingham City in insisting their team boss will not be moving to St James's Park.
Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside yesterday dismissed speculation that an approach had been received for their manager, former Sunderland player and coach Sam Allardyce.
His Birmingham counterpart David Gold ruled his manager, Corbridge-born Steve Bruce, out of the running on Monday, insisting he would stay at St Andrew's and honour his newly-signed contract.
Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren announced on Tuesday that he would not be swapping Teesside for Tyneside, but United skipper Alan Shearer, Terry Venables, George Graham, Gerard Houllier and Martin O'Neill still figure prominently in the bookmakers' odds on Sir Bobby Robson's successor. |

| Taylors chance is now. With Woodgate gone this is the time for him to take a play as a regular in the 1st team. As far as im concerned the central defenders we have, none are certain ot get 1st team football all the time. |

Taylor's got heaps of potential, given a decent run in the first team, he could perform very well.
Although, Bramble had potential as well and he has been a very slow starter |

In my opinion Bramble is utter e. The amount of balls he goes for and completely misses or when he runs upto the ball and just twats it where ever.
Its not good. :( |

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has admitted that the club are looking at legal issues, ahead of their appointment of a new manager.
Shepherd has admitted the club need to be aware of what he describes as a 'legal minefield'.
The Magpies supremo admits the club will talk to anyone they feel is appropriate.
"I know the fans are impatient. But I am as impatient as they are." Shepherd told the Evening Chronicle.
"But what I have got to do is what is best for Newcastle United, not what is best for my popularity.
"We don't want any knee-jerk reaction and we cannot rush into anything.
"We are trying to do things correctly and professionally.
"Don't forget there is a legal minefield out there and we have got to observe all the rules of The Premiership.
"But we are talking to everyone we are legally entitled to and those who we feel merit our consideration.
"What we must not forget is that it is the future of Newcastle United which is at stake here and the most important thing is that we get the right man."
Speculation is now rife that Steve Bruce and David O'Leary are Shepherd's preferred choices - given that he has admitted that legal ramifications are an issue being looked at by the club and both those managers would need to be freed from their contracts at their respective clubs.
Terry Venables, Gordon Strachan and Graeme Souness are still believed to be under consideration, but Shepherd appears to be closing on his main targets.
Alan Shearer ruled himself out of the running on Thursday, meaning the club will not be appointing Sir Bobby Robson's successor from within St James' Park.
Next Newcastle Manager: Bruce 5/2; Venables 7/2; O'Leary 5/1; Strachan 8/1; Curbishley, McClaren, Shearer 16/1; Allardyce, O'Neill 20/1; Graham, Hoddle 25/1; Keegan 28/1; bar 33/1 -

Same here. But if you look at our defence now, we dont really have any outstanding defenders. If we do decide to buy now it wont be til January and by that time, with the current defence, our season will be over :( |

| Yep, a fking disgrace, where was this "suprise" signing we were going to make Freddy :( |

I think a German minded tactician like Hitzfeld could surely patch things up. He'd be my no 1 choice at the moment to succeed Bobby Robson
Although im not convinced he will stick with the players we have at the club currently..European managers always buy foreign players. Eg - Mourinho,Benitez.
So that could possibly lead to Jenas,Ambrose,Bowyer etc departing. |
