To be fair to Souness on this one, there aren't many proven strikers about at the moment that Newcastle could sign. Robbie Keane from Tottenham, Kuijt from Feyenoord, maybe Saviola from Barcelona, Anelka from Fenerbahce, running out of names already. It's not a good time to be looking for a striker but it's our biggest priority. It looks like we will be playing a primarily 4-3-3 formation next season, with Boa Morte as a left forward and Dyer as a right forward, with possibly Emre, Parker and Jenas in the middle. I could see teams struggling to cope with the pace, movement and finishing of Boa Morte, Anelka and Dyer, with Emre, Parker and Jenas providing the ammunition. Saviola would be my choice for a 4-4-2, but in a 4-3-3 we'd need someone not only quick but also powerful, and Anelka fits the bill.
In terms of ability, Anelka goes straight to the top of the list of realistic, affordable, proven strikers. His attitude is very questionable to say the least and he would be a big gamble, but at the right price he could be worth the gamble in our current, desperate situation. It does of course make Souness look very hypocritical, getting rid of Bellamy for being a troublemaker and then targetting 'The Incredible Sulk'. On the Newcastle forums we've had fans from Anelka's former clubs Man City, Liverpool and his current club Fenerbahce saying that Anelka has never caused trouble at their clubs and that he gets a lot of bad stick because of his younger days. The worrying thing is the number of clubs he has been through, from PSG to Real Madrid, to Arsenal to Liverpool to Man City to Fenerbahce and he's only 26. His brothers who are also his agents seem to engineer a move for him wherever possible.
For 4M (what the papers are saying) he could be a bargain, but I don't think we would get him that cheap considering Fenerbahce paid 7M in January. I'd rather have him than Keane or Viduka, who we have been linked with so far.
A lot of the Newcastle fans are divided on this one, they worry about his attitude but recognise the desperate situation we are in. |

| Wenger hasn't ruled out moving for Jenas, saying that "for the moment" he hasn't made a bid for him. |

There are stong rumours that Newcastle could soon be taken over.
BBC:
| quote: | Shares in Newcastle United rallied nearly 18% on Monday amid speculation of a takeover bid for the club.
The club's former chairman, businessman Sir John Hall, told the stock market that an unnamed party had showed an interest in buying up his 28.5% stake.
Shares are now at their highest level for four years, valuing them at £75.6m.
In a statement to the London Stock Exchange, Sir John said he had received an approach "which may, or may not" lead to a disposal of his stake. |
Noone knows who the bidder is. There are rumours that it could be Graham Wylie, a Geordie, Newcastle fan and Newcastle season-ticket holder. He owns Sage and is said to have about 300M, although he was labelled as Tyneside's first billionaire. There are also suggestions of a consortium bidding though, possibly from Asia. The last thing we want is a Malcolm Glazer situation developing, but Wylie could be a big improvement on Shepherd and Hall who have been filtering millions out of Newcastle in dividends for years and have made the club a public laughing stock. An Abramovich-style takeover is most unlikely. Freddy Shepherd has been buying up a lot of shares lately and something has been brewing for a while.
This is potentially massive news for the club, it all depends on whether Hall and Shepherd are prepared to sell, and just who exactly is trying to buy up the club. Prepare yourselves for a takeover people. |

| bar the 2 goals, I think newcastle showed glimpses today. Luque was a threat and his obvious lack of match fitness showed, he's classy tho & will come through it. Losing Dyer & Emre was awful, Ameobi isn't good enough imho, i'd have had milner on for dyer & look for another centre back. Bar that, it was a better performance, and results will follow if you stick to it |

| yeah i think newcastles first half was terrific but you could see the midfield lost some of its strength when emre left. and bowyer also doesnt deserve to be in the first 11, jenas should have been on from the start. |

1. Sign Michael Owen
2. Sell Jermaine Jenas to Spurs for 8/9 million (YAY!)
3. Re-sign Norberto Solano (meant to be a done deal!) - OMFG! to have Solano back would be the best thing ever! |
