NO has been very lucky by the looks of it. A combination of a wobble to the east and an influx of dry air reduced the winds to the West of the eye meaning NO was hit relatively easy and certainly wasnt affected by any storm surge from the lake to the North.

Alabama and Mississippi seem to have it pretty hard thought, storm surge of 30+ ft with 30 ft waves on top of that. There will not be much left of any beach front property.

Still awaiting a cat5 hurricane to hit a major urban full-on, will happen.........eventually

I always wondered what happens with the costs of these hurricanes? Do you have to have special insurances for them or what?

As far as i know, no.

there isn't a hurricane insurance. Especially not in the states cuz they hardly get enough of them.

Back in Puerto Rico, we average about 6-8 hurricanes a year. some small, some NOT SO SMALL.......but if anything, you'd get flood insurance, or property damage, or something like that.

there really isn't a HURRICANE insurance that i know of.

Those were the early reports, but the mayor says 80% of the city is under water. Yeah they did luck out a bit in that it moved a bit east before it struck though. It could have been much worse I agree.

Hospital evacuates as New Orleans levee breaks

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Posted: 0909 GMT (1709 HKT)

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- As the death toll from Hurricane Katrina reached at least 54, a levee holding back the waters of Lake Pontchartrain sustained a breach two blocks long in the Lakefront area of New Orleans.

The breach triggered rapidly rising floodwaters in the city's downtown and prompted at least one hospital to evacuate patients by air.

The death toll was expected to climb from one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast in half a century. Fifty of the deaths occurred in one county in Mississippi, CNN confirmed.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin confirmed the breach in a local TV interview. City fire officials said the break was about 200 feet long in the levee surrounding the 17th Street Canal.

"My heart is heavy tonight," Nagin said in the interview on WWL-TV. "I don't have any good news to share.

"The city of New Orleans is in a state of devastation. We probably have 80 percent of our city underwater. With some sections of our city, the water is as deep as 20 feet."

you would be covered but quite often, especially with smaller local insurace companies, they will go out of business as a result of all the claims
