This really sucks ass.
My sister is a med student at LSU Medical Center of New Orleans and has a first floor apartment in Metaire. She's going to lose absolutely everything. A category 5 storm + New Orleans = catastrophy.
Keep the NOLA residents in your thoughts. It's gonna be a rough couple of days/weeks down in the big easy. |

There are a couple of key factors:
1.) this will be only the 4th category 5 hurricane in history to hit the US coast
2.) N.O. sits roughly 6 feet below sea level (There are levies created to keep the water out). But these levies (if I am even spelling it right) are only designed to with stand a category 3 hurricane.
3.) A Cat 5 hurricane packs storm surges of 20-25 feet with locally 30 foot amounts.
Think of N.O. as an empty below ground swimming pool about to be filled....
Now the reason this storm is taking the path it is, is due to the upper level pattern. Ill try to keep this simple and not bore everyone with meteorological jargon. High pressure off over the rockies is helping and to the north will help to steer the hurricane to the northwest and soon on a more northerly path.
Now for eye candy. Ill explain later if you are interested (and these images are only valid for about 18 more hours before being updated):
This is a monsterous storm!!

Hi mr weatherman
So how much damage do you think will occur on N.O. and can they do anything against another hurricane |

| New Orleans is going to be turned into a swirling sesspool of sewage and general catastrophic fukkery. Nutrias, red fire ant balls, alligators, corpses from exhumed graves... . |

Weatherman is the cap you see on TV. Ive got a 4 year degree and not TV certification... anywho
If the storm maintains its projected path it will be detrimental..... but it may degrade some and be only a cat 4... but still... the durty south is for lack of another word... ed.
Here is a local persective from a the south:

Here is an update from a local perspective. It looks like a Cat 5 going through New Orleans East, which they are predicting 10-20 ft storm surge in Lake Ponchartrain, with immediate coastal areas faring even worse. The mayor, who said he would never do it because it was unrealistic, has just called a mandatory evacuation for New Orleans. The good news is, unlike for Ivan, the evacuation traffic has been flowing smoothly...for now.
The levees are only designed for a Cat 3, so this is possibly the storm everyone has feared.
Thus far, there aren't even any signs of a surge in Ponchartrain, so the deteriating conditions in a few hours will be mind-boggling.
