Those were the early reports, but the mayor says 80% of the city is under water. Yeah they did luck out a bit in that it moved a bit east before it struck though. It could have been much worse I agree.

not good :( thinkning about it all the rain that has fallen upstate in Lousiana will now be coming down the Mississippi and probably into the streets of NO. Just seen footage from some chasers in Gulfport, pretty much annihalated

This is really terrible news.

Two levees are now breeched.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Two levee breaches are sending floodwaters pouring into low-lying New Orleans.

A colonel with the Army Corps of Engineers says one in the eastern part of the city has forced "significant evacuations" in Orleans and St. Bernard parishes. The Corps says another breach in western New Orleans that began yesterday afternoon may have grown overnight.

Hundreds of people have been rescued from rooftops. In some cases, rescuers sawed through roofs to free people who fled to their attics as the waters rose.

One man says he and his fiancee sat on their roof for three hours before being taken to safety. Bryan Vernon says the water "kept rising and rising and rising."

Mayor Ray Nagin has told WWL TV that "80 percent" of the city is under water. He says it's 20 feet deep in some places.

As far as i know, no.

there isn't a hurricane insurance. Especially not in the states cuz they hardly get enough of them.

Back in Puerto Rico, we average about 6-8 hurricanes a year. some small, some NOT SO SMALL.......but if anything, you'd get flood insurance, or property damage, or something like that.

there really isn't a HURRICANE insurance that i know of.

FYI, I'm and insurance adjuster, I know a thing or two about this....

There is no specific hurricane insurance, however, that is not to say that damage from a hurricane is not covered...
1) Most property insurance policies cover "windstorm" damage. A hurricane is a "windstorm". Under Windstorm damage caused by wind would be covered. Additionally, if the wind crates an open apature from which water enters into your property the resulting water damage would be covered.
2) Most property insurance policies also cover "impact by flying object, missle, or projectile". Damage due to any objects that impact your home while being carried by the wind would be covered under this section of the property policy. Additionally, as with the windstorm coverage, if the flying object, missle, or projectile creates an open apature allowing water to enter the home the resulting water damage would be covered.
3) Many policies also cover sewer back up (usually and additional coverage that you buy). If water enters your home through the sewer system and you have this coverage then the damage is recoverable through insurance.

What would not be covered is damage due to flooding as floods are not covered by insurance nor would damage caused by water entering your home through foundations, door frames, or windows (called seepage which is considered to by a maintenance problem and therefore not covered). In the case of a hurricane, however, this would likely not be an issue if you were to carry sewer back up coverage as with the widespread flooding the sewers would back up and it is impossible to determine what damage is caused by the sewage back up and what is caused by the flooding.

Based on the above coverages you can see that hurricane damage would almost certainly be recoverable under a property insurance policy. HOWEVER, please note that the above is based on standard policies... it is possible that some policies may specifically exclude damage by hurricanes, thus, in order to trully know one would have to check their policy wordings.

has anyone read "The Control of Nature"?

its a great book, but also points out the fact that NOLA has been due for something like this for decades if not years.

the mouth of the Mississippi River should be somewhere in Texas by now, if nature had any say|
Demoted
I completely disregarded those tornado warnings last night. Which was very idiotic.

And that stuff going on in the Superdome is terrible. You know it's a strong storm when it blows some of the roof of of stadiums.

What I don't understand is why, in 2005 with all the technology we have, are we not prepared for such events. Why is it always the same story: Don't fix it if it's not broken, and when it breaks we'll fix it. This falls in the same category of 9/11. We never had homeland security until that happened. Now I almost guarantee NO and the rest of the coastline will have something prepared in case of another storm in the future. I just don't get why things happen like this anymore. Someone please enlighten me.

Well as my whole family is mostly from Louisiana, I haven't been able to reach anyone due to phone and power outages. So I'm in the dark beside what is on the news.

Steven, I understand your frustration, but honestly, when it comes to nature, you can never prevent anything, you can only hope to contain it and they were hoping that the 15 foot levee's would be enough to contain the Category 4. The city itself is below sea level, a catastrophy like this was bound to eventually happen.

i can't find any good resoultion pics of the damage in new orleans, can someone post some ?
