There is a difference between accepting and allowing people to be who and what they are and throwing it in other peoples faces. I know and party with many of the people who you have an issue with and my sexual orientation is a non issue with them. Why? I don't throw it in their faces and they don't throw theirs in mine. Graham (Thehighroller) and I go out and hang out at clubs all the time. We have a great time and I am proud to call him a friend. There is nothing wrong with him preferring to be around young girls when he is out at a club, and if he feels that way doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the best possible house club.
The gay crowd Stereo attracts and the gay crowd Sonic attracted in the past is very different. The Stereo crowd may have their shirts off but it is a different vibe than the one given off at Sonic at past events and for a while there the percentage of gay men was extremely high(in comparison to Stereo). Sonic has felt more like a circuit party than any event I have attended at Stereo (although I have never been to any of the "gay dj" nights there). If I wanted to attend a circuit party I would go to Fly or Sonic on a Friday night. I want to go to a club where the music is great, the sound system is world class, and people want to have fun...not do crystal and get messed and start having a shirtless orgy in the middle of the dance floor (again if I want that I would go to the "pit" at Fly).
What needs to happen is for the gay circuit queens to realize it isn't a circuit party and have some respect and consideration for the str8 crowd and then the respect will be given back. Saturdays at Sonic should not be classified as "gay" or "str8". It should be about the music and the acceptance and openness of everyone, but that goes both ways - keep your shirts on and be there for the party.
---see what happens when you're home sick - you start ranting |
grammers even came out to that sketchie mess, paying full door cover i think, that was Revival @ the Guv this past pride.... just for morales.
and u know u miss the pit jay, admit it. |

I think you guys decided already - let me see, house music and no t-shirtless guys? yup ... Can you imagine Paradise Garage in NYC with no gay? Stereo with no gays? Crobar with no gays?
Now if we are talking about a temple of trance, for sure everyone will be fully dressed, and I don't expect less from you straight boys. |
I've seen more shirtless guys at trance parties then a lot of gay parties. it's just that at the gay parties they're in large packs as opposed to spread out like they are at the trance parties ;) |

and sex sells. it's not a new concept.

While this is undeniably true, I can tell you that I don't want to have any part of a club that bases its appeal and branding image on being a pick-up joint.
Once a club goes this route, it's not about the music anymore. |

You are completely missing the point. They need to start attracting more people and the only way more straight people will come is if less of them think of it as a "gay" club. It has nothing to do with becoming a pickup joint, it's about trying to make it more comfortable for a larger portion of people. |

i think perhaps you're new to the world of nightclubs.
I cannot think of a single club in the 9 years I've been attending them where people didn't pick people up, and where a good portion of the people there didn't try to at some point.
Obviously some clubs are more of a pick up joint then others, but if you think it's not like that at clubs that are "about the music", then you are extremely naive.
I'm pretty sure everyone on here has met someone at a club that they dated... or "picked up" if you will.
and besides, what is so wrong about people wanting to date people and looking for mates. procreation is in our genes. If you don't want to or be ed, then you are genetically defective. |

I don't agree. Even though the intent may be to make the club more "comfortable" for the straight crowd, the message that is communicated by having "hot women" on flyers (IH's terminology) is going to be that this is a place where hot women frequent and hence, hot women are available to be picked up.
Are flyers like this going to attract a crowd that is going for the music, or for the "hot women"? Perhaps a bit of both, but I would fear that you'd get a lot more of the top 40 type pickup crowd, which I don't think is what the owners have ever wanted for Sonic. |

I think the issue is about whether you want to intentionally re-position your club to make it crystal clear it is a straight club by using sexually suggestive flyers.
someone said it earlier - "it reeks of desperation". |

That's the problem with everyone today...they complain about everything else...and forget that it is about the music. That's all I care about...no shirt policies and sexual orientation don't come across my mind...when I'm dancing, I look at everyone else as just a partier. |

Don't take this the wrong way, but you are extremly naive in terms of nightlcubs and marketing. |

I guess you just don't understand the point trying to be made. And if you think you do, well we definately see it very differently.

How does this "reek of desperation"?? They are trying to start a new image, so things have to change. You can't keep the same image and try to attract straight people it just won't work. Putting attractive women on flyers is a very simple way of letting newcomers know that it is not so gay oriented anymore and that they should give Sonic a try. Why is this so hard to see? |
