Headliners on Fridays have been starting around 1:30.

1. Shirts on, on Saturdays.
2. Serve booze.
3. Open earlier.

This is what sonic needs. So many people are saying/ have been saying this. It's up to them to make the changes.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

It's pretty hard for me to make the commitment to go to a party where the DJ *starts* at 4am, unless it's a special occasion. I know for a fact that there are lots of other people in agreeance with this. It's just not realistic for most people to be a regular at a club where the party gets started at 4am.

Fridays and Saturdays are different, and should be viewed as such. Again, I could be mistaken, but women don't typically like to go out (or stay out) as late as men. Starting earlier on Saturdays would bring more women, which would bring more men...
Big Boss
The "other club" that people compare Sonic to wasn't built in a day. You youngin's need to remember that there was a time where it was normal to have 500 people in the main room on a Saturday night back in the day. It took time for it to grow and grow to the point where it is busy every weekend.

Cover is an issue at times, because there aren't many people that will pay $30+ an event regardless of who the DJ is. You have to remember, that Torontonians are notoriously stingy about paying cover, so basing your revenue on people paying cover in this city is going to be difficult.

Sonic needs booze and earlier starts. But that is easier said than done.

Jeff, I could be wrong, but I don't think you need 2) to do 3). Open the doors at at 11:30pm or 12pm, let the headliner go on at 2am (til 6am or later if they want), and then let a new local talent close from 6am onward (if the people/demand is there). People can pre-drink till 12pm...that's more than enough time (unless you are Alocin or English Rachel, LOL)....most won't show up until around 1am anyway...but will be ready to roll for 2am...

The stronger the opening act, the more people that will show up earlier. Again, try to bring in local djs with strong followings...

IMO, for Sonic to significantly increase the numbers I think they need to be people's first and only club destination for the night, not their second or third...

Couldn't have said it better.

There may be other factors, I was just stating the main reason why opening earlier would not make sense without booze. It costs a lot for the club to operate with door staff, security, coat check, etc. and opening early simply to get the headliner on sooner would not make a difference. In the end it would just cost the club more money.

The extra costs would be an investment to increase the crowds. I know there have been many times I have chosen to go to Gallery around midnight to get the night started with the intention of going to Sonic - but end up staying.

I'm sure if we took a poll there would be a lot of people who intended to go to Sonic but got too trashed somewhere else, went somewhere else and enjoyed it and decided to stay, or even fell asleep waiting for Sonic to open.

If Sonic opened earlier and the headliner came on earlier I would drink at home or a local bar and head over, especially if I knew it would only be an hour or two at the most waiting for the headliner.

In a perfect world Sonic would buy the little restaurant beside it (which has a liquor license) and open Sonic Bar like Stereo did. Stereo Bar is an amazing start to your night and then at 3AM you walk up the stairs and enjoy Stereo.

My 2 cents.

Stereo in Montreal doesn't open until late and has no liquor and it is successful.

Perhaps Sonic prefers that type of format (true after-hours)?

You can't compare Sonic to Stereo in terms of no liquor and being succesful...reason being ALL clubs close at 3AM in Montreal. After that there are 2 afterhours clubs you can go to downtown. Stereo and Circus...(ARIA closed in December.) The fact that licensed clubs in T.O can stay open until 7am is what Sonic's biggest competition is. If all those clubs closed at 2 or 3am, people would be forced (as they do in Montreal) to go to an afterhours if they wanted to continue partying.

But Stereo also opened Stereo Bar, which has been packed and a lot of fun the 4 times I have been there.

my biggest problem with sonic is the opening times...... i always see events that i wanna go to but then decide not to go after realising that the main dj wont be on until 4......

i went to sonic for the first time on saturday night and loved it but it was a huge inconvenience cuz it started so late, i actually had to take a nap from like 12-2 to re-energize myself..... if they opened at like 11 or 12, main dj coming on at like 1.30-2.30 then i would probably attend many more parties.... serving liquor would obviously be a big bonus too

making these changes would do a lot for the place, assuming everyone feels the same way i do, which it seems like after reading this thread.....

So let me get this straight. You would rather keep the club open one or two hours later (e.g. 8am or 9am), than open it one or two hours earlier (e.g. 11pm or 12 pm)?

Doesn't the club incur essentially the same marginal costs (door staff, security, coat check, etc.) over those one or two hours, give or take a couple hundred bucks? How many extra people would you need to attract to make it worthwhile? Am I missing something?

Yes, it is infact an afterhours club.

I honestly do not believe the club would do any better if we opened at 11pm and closed at 7am. For every person we gained from opening earlier, we would lose another because the club wouldn't be open long enough to justify paying cover for another 3 or 4 hours + of partying.

One of the reasons why we get so many people coming at 3:00 onwards is because they know we will be open at least 5-6 hours longer.

Moral of this thread, you can't please everyone.
