| I find it funny how some people truly believe that I deserve less respect and am less "entitled" to the scene because I want girls instead of shirtless men in the clubs that I go to. |

I think the issue is about whether you want to intentionally re-position your club to make it crystal clear it is a straight club by using sexually suggestive flyers.
someone said it earlier - "it reeks of desperation". |
How do you suggest that Sonic gets rid of its 'gay club' image then? |

Don't take this the wrong way, but you are extremly naive in terms of nightlcubs and marketing. |
But according to what you are suggesting, I should expect TiL's flyers, Gallery's flyers, Guv's flyers and FW's flyers to be rife with "sex sells" type messages. But they aren't. What I have seen are generic flyers from these places that emphasize the headlining DJs name and have some info on the venue, other djs, tickets etc. And usually there's an attractive background, colours, patterns, etc. - and that's it.
No "hot women". |

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but there are multiple ways that an image can be used, each used in a design can suggest something different. Any good designer knows how to get a point across clearly.
as for it reaking of desperation... I know clubs in this city, and I can tell you that pretty much every club in this city has done that at some point. hell, footwork had a half naked woman in lingerie on a flyer not 3 weeks ago.
It's all about what context you use the image in.
any one with any marketing or design experience knows this. I assume that you have neither have neither since you aren't getting it. |

I promote Gallery every Saturday, I promote the special events at Guvernment, I promote This is London on Fridays, I've also done 4 Saturday special events at Footwork in the last 4 months.
I am very familiar with their advertising. Guv has used images like that, so has london, and so has footwork.
I understand where you're coming from, but like I am trying to explain, there are multiple ways you can use an image to get multiple points across. If you're trying to make it known that a night is more of a straight night, then clearly you're not going to take a picture of a woman in a bikini sweezing her together and make it cover the entire front of the flyer. You might do something like take a an image of a woman and just use a black outline of it in the background. or maybe like shilouete of a womans frame... there are a million ways to get the point across without making it look like a tacky flyer for top 40 bar.
Like I said, a good designer can use that female image to get the point across without comprimising the clubs image. |

Wow, this thread took up at least an hour of reading at work...and one whole page was added in that time. I've only been to Sonic once for MSTRKRFT, and I had a great time. I have to say that as someone who is almost 32 (yes I'm holding on to my youth as it slips through my fingers like hair falls off my head), I usually start the night off at the Gallery or Footwork with the intention of going to Sonic to hear some of the great talent they have brought in. But usually what happens is I'm having such a great time where I am and weighing the options of staying where I am and dancing the night away or getting my coat, a cab, waiting in yet another line and paying 35 bucks to get in after having blown a wad of cash already, I usually opt for staying put. As I am getting older I have started over the last couple of years of transitioning away from chemical incentives. Of course as such the "afterhours" clubs are a bit harder to take. Usually by 4am my back has started to hurt after 5-6 hours of continual dancing. So for me paying another 35 bucks for a couple more hours of dancing and quite possibly not seeing the headliner, it just doesn't make sense. The Guv/Gallery/Footwork/TiL all bring their headliners on earlier, so if by 4am I am feeling tired, but the vibe is good, it's not that hard to stay put and keep going.
But then again, I'm just getting old and cranky so maybe my rant doesn't make sense. |

It's even been done several times at Footwork. |
and the last time they did, the place was dead.
Edit: I agree there are wrong and right ways to do it. and that last time it was done for the footwork jam was just not the right way of doing it. |

From my perspective the debate really isn't about flyer design or marketing. It's the fact that we're even contemplating a compromise at ALL about what this scene has always been about, and should always be. (the music)
Yeah at the end of the day, the till has to ring in enough cash to pay the bills, and everyone knows that.
And yeah I'm being an idealist, and yeah, intentionally stubborn just to make a point because I think the fundamental point is lost on a lot of people. |
