Not to be a dick (well maybe a little) but Trump actually got 306 Electoral votes, and it's been officially called as an "electoral landslide".

The really interesting thing though is that Hilary is set to have one of the largest popular votes leads in "losing" history as it just breached 2m votes.
And now we're going to get recounts in WI, PA, and MI......What the was it with this election cycle. |

Not just that, but this cycle was straight up bat crazy.
I actually wonder whether the system can recover or if this marked a turning point, where facts, polls and policy just don't matter anymore. |

It has been widely reported that there were more than 3 million votes cast by illegal aliens and most, if not all these votes, were cast for Hillary Clinton. When accounting for these votes, Trump beat Clinton by more than 1 million in the popular vote.
Trump destroyed Clinton in the Electoral College votes 306 to 232 or 57% to 43%.
Trump also won more than 30 states with his win of 1 of four delegates in Maine. Trump ended up with 30.25 state wins to Hillary’s 19.75 wins. Hillary didn’t even win 20 states and Trump beat her 61% to 39% in state wins.
Also, Trump won 84% of the US’s 3,083 counties – this was truly a Trump landslide win in all areas. |

I'm inclined to agree with you, but Brazilian democracy suffers from the exact opposite problem, so I'm not sure we can say anything (there are so many parties gridlock is inevitable, and these unstable alliances forced us to adopt something like electoral colleges exclusively for the parliament). Also, we treat presidents like prime ministers and impeach them whenever we feel like passing a no confidence vote.

Who's to blame? People of course. People and politics are tribal. Much like sport fans winning is what matters. Our party against yours etc. Facts and reason be dammed. I can see why our forefathers were afraid unchecked democracy and the wisdom of the masses. It doesn't take much for an angry lynch mob to form and put in power a thug who makes them feel good.
