But then, I doubted he'd become president in the first place, so what do I know? :p
I'm not saying it will definitely play out like that. Four years is a long time for the apparatus of the state to resist its own leader. But long-term, it would probably be the best outcome.

I think it;s the other way around; 4 years is a long time for someone to keep attempting the same thing and hoping for a different result. Just look at the initial executive orders; one completely dead in the water, and nearly all the others have been challenged in some meaningful way.
Trump has had to concede defeat on his travel ban EO in it's initial form and he's going to have to draft and entirely, and much more diluted version if it's going to have any chance of passing, so it's really a case of him adjusting to the checks and balances, not 4 years of erosion bending to his will.
Of course, if the supreme court gets his nom, and he fill all the open judiciary seats then he'll have more support but there's still plenty of check and balances in his way, especially as he doesn't have an outright popular mandate.
It's further complicated for him as the foundation of the GOP, senators and governors, have virtually had to cancel all their usual town hall and public rallies due to massive discontent for constituents. It's going to mean they aren't as gung ho to back him in contentious battles if it means losing their seat.
Berlusconi isn't a great parallel; the italians have always turned a blind eye to corruption and while it maybe a functioning, saw 63 governments in 65 years so the mess predated Berlusconi by decades.Furthermore, Burlusconi controls controls something like 60% of itialian news media, and the top three media outlets. Trump has no where near that level of control over media, or wealth to be honest.
And even in a country like italy where corruption is endemic, Burlusconi got convicted twice and his political career is now all but over as he can't have any political position until he's 77 years old.
I suppose you could argue it's another cautionary tale of letting wealth and bravado bully their way to power but burlusconi is in a league of his own and trump looks like a political minnow compared to Burlusconi.

But even if he stops acting like a bull in a legislative china shop, there are legitimate ways he could enact all his terrible policies. I would hope his utter ineptitude and inexperience at proper politics will result in continual failure, but it's very hard to predict. I doubt things can go on the way they are for four straight years, in any case.
DJ RANN
Very true. He has the apparatus at his disposal and if he figures out how to use it for nefarious means rather than trying to brain fart his way through policy, he will end up getting his way eventually.
One of the good things about appointing people who are utterly unqualified for the job along side him is that they don't properly understand the apparatus of government either - the travel ban for instance has Bannon as Architect and a speechwriter to draft it, and neither have any legislative experience. I suppose this is the difference between Trump and Bush (W) - while both seem clumsily inept, Bush at least had seasoned and experienced political operators immediately around him to pick up the slack and enact their policies.
You're absolutely right though; I just don't see how the current state could continue for another 3.9 years. Continual failure at this level will result in the GOP losing the house in 2018 and then the block is on for real. It would have to be Executive orders all the way but having said that, the Dems are such bunch of directionless pussies right now, I'm not sure if it would make a difference.

"... unfortunately the intellectual capacity of the President is protozoan"
Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly officially ordered federal agents this week to begin arresting and deporting more illegal immigrants, releasing them from the handcuffs the Obama administration had imposed, and making headway on one of President Trump’s chief campaign promises. While young adult illegal immigrant “Dreamers” are still exempted, agents were told there are no longer any other special classes of people that should be considered off limits for deportation.
I'm loving this news cycle. Trump just can't help but it all up :stongue:

wtf you talking about ???
this is from the same article...

Dreamers, the young adult illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and who have kept clean legal records, are still generally exempted from deportations, as they were under Mr. Obama.
but if they up ----> there's this
quote:
Mr. Kelly also revoked the Obama administration’s stricter set of priorities for deportation, which required felony convictions or multiple misdemeanors, and replaced them with a broader set of priorities that targets anyone arrested for a crime, as well as those convicted.
doesn't this make sense ? This is how its supposed to be? No ?

I'm feeling generous today and you actually tried to string some words together than posing an Oompa loompa meme, so I'll bite....
1, You don't seem to understand that by introducing his massive and far reaching executive order on immigration, yet specifically excluding DAPA and DACA, he's making it known they are safe. It would have been two extra lines to put them on the list, but instead the order goes out of it's to state they are NOT included. Finally Trumpy is feeling the pressure.
2, Make no mistake, I'm with you on the criminal thing; You're in the USA illegally and convicted of commit a crime? Deportation is the only sane action.
That's not the problem. The problem is that Trump is going about this in a idiotically child like manner.
You need to realize that Obama deported more illegals (2.5m) than any president in history (the next nearest being Dubya at 2m). Obama's priority was illegals that have committed a crime.
This is a fact and It's a total fantasy (or better said PR soundbite) that Trump is doing anything that his immediate two predecessors haven't.
However, the much bigger problem is that Trump announced he's going to add "5,000 Border patrol agents, and 10,000 DHS agents in 2 years".
ing moron.
The Head of Homeland Security (Trump's own pick) has said, it will be a miracle if they even are able to hire 5,000 in 4 years (let alone 2) due to the necessary extreme vetting (cartels have a long and focussed effort to get agents on their payroll). It's takes a year to do all the background checks, polygraphs and vetting, and that's before they even start a year long training program so they don't cause an international disaster.
Now factor in that border patrol, actually has over 1000 vacant positions that needed filling before Trump made this announcement so it's actually 6,000 he needs to hire to get to his desired numbers. And we haven't even started to talk about those 10,000 DHS agents who need even stricter vetting.
Never going to happen even if he got two terms.
But why are there 1000 open positions? Becuase most people hired for border patrol aren't hired in Border towns. They're usually hired as deputies and local law enforcement across the states that want a better position. The money and benefits of a federal job sound great.
Then they get to a ty border town such as Del Rio, Texas, where there's all to do apart from apprehend people desperately fleeing extreme poverty and/or gang violence, and they quit the out.
Then there's a the budget. To hire all those extra BPA's the cost is staggering - $171,000 per year per agent or $3.4bn a year, and that's once they're in the job. The entire annual budget for the border patrol as it stands is just $6bn per year so that would mean we're up to nearly $10bn when border crossings have reduced from 1.6m a year in 2000, to less than 400k last year.
So that's $10bn to stop 400k people getting in.
And now ass that to the wall which is going to cost $20bn and that's over 30% of the $85bn required in cuts to avoid the sequester.
Cataclysmic waste of money in a pathetic attempt to show "you just get it done" and it's all going to blow up when the bill has to be paid for the sequester.
