Oh, well, I always feel bad when I see the losing team. Colombians are sweethearts, it's a shame only one of the teams could advance :(

I didnt want to say this before the end, but for that first half of extra time i thought the same, but then we came out in the second half and seemed to have pulled ourselves together, got back in the driving seat and made some pretty good chances. Also it was great to see a really positive late sub in bringing Rashford on.

You're right Dave, and it was important that we pegged them back in the last 15 of extra time, because it put us back on top psychologically. I thought Southgate was wrong to bring on a holding midfielder in the dying minutes of normal time, because it made us play so defensively, but he must have said the right words in that last break in extra time. We got our heads back together. |

I mean, we've had two "dynasties" so far - the 1958-1970 one, when we won 3 of 4 World Cups, and 1994-2002, when we reached the final three times in a row, winning 2 of them. Italy has also won titles back to back, and Germany usually move upwards and collapse. Because of that, it had come to a point I thought it was someone else's turn to steal the limelight. Did I support Brazil then? Yes. Did I mind if some newcomer beat us? Not really, no. Even Italy and Germany, as long as they're beating Argentina. Sibling rivalry, you see.
I know winning again feels a bit like "title hogging", because Brazil alone has more World Cups than all other countries still competing combined. Since 2013, however, the political climate here has been insufferable, with clueless commentators and op-ed writers somehow claiming football - one of the few institutions in Brazil that actually works at elite level - is a contributing factor to poverty and political alienation, rather than an exemplary institution that, for all its faults (and there are many), often gives meaning and careers to poor disadvantaged kids that seldom have the means to make it elsewhere. These "educated" commentators often overlook the impact Pelé and Garrincha had on race relations, for example, and how important it was to have black kids conquer the world.
So, at least for me, it's no longer about football alone this time. |
