| I think overall Croatia deserved the win and showed the better football. For that small country with just half the number of people of London this is great. |

I've been in a pub with no signal all game. I thought our first half was superb but Croatia were the better team from half time onwards. They scored at an important moment and then their quality in midfield and in possession made the difference.
I'm still proud of this team. We went down fighting and we've done better than I could ever have predicted before the tournament began. I don't feel the usual English sensation of disgust and disappointment. Plus I won £75 on Croatia so I finished the World Cup with a slight profit. |

I really could only watch the first half in it's entirety then glimpses of the second half.
It seemed like England had brought the game to them in the first half and looked dangerous, and I'm so happy that Trippier got his set piece goal, but as time went on, it become apparent that the squad just doesn't have the open play finishing ability that you need to go all the way, and I reckon Croatia began to sense it.
I think it's been a great run, and Kane, Lingard, Trippier, and Maguire really showed they have the fiber for the biggest of platforms, but most of all, I think Southgate can walk away from his first major tournament with head held high and a huge amount of respect for taking a young, internationally inexperienced team that far.
I'm actually amazed how good England are at set pieces and if they can figure out the open play flow in midfield and finishing, they could be an elite contender.
My only enduring criticism of Southgate, is Sterling. I get you've got to give a guy a chance, and he was able to put himself in the right position at several times, but he proved again and again, he could not deliver in the box or when it counts. I wish Rashford would have been given starting place as the default and I can't really understand the perseverance of Southgate to keep Sterling in the starting lineup.
Looking forward to the next Euro cup. |
