We look okay. I'm not convinced by our passing out from the back. Instead of twatting the ball forward from defence, we play three passes around the back four before one of our players remembers he's English and not Spanish, and then panics and twats the ball forward anyway.

And I don't care how many six yard tap ins he's scored from Sane crosses for Man City this season, Sterling is ing terrible. He can't finish for toffee and he is incapable of going shoulder to shoulder with a full back. I'd much rather see Rashford in that position, flaky as he is.

This is so spot on, but I'd also throw Lingard in there as well. I have no idea why he wasn't subbed off in the first half. Apparently fans in the stadium were yelling "get him off the pitch" lol.

Glad that Kane can at least finish in style, but England are toast if they play like that against Portugal.

I will say the ref missed a shocker which would have easily been a penalty when Kane got clotheslined to the ground in the box during an early corner.

IMO it's refreshing to see them play close touch football rather than being Man Utd for 90 minutes. It might not be working (and I love the spanish reference) but at least it's something different and they looked a lot more confident than I've ever seen England playing a close passing game.

Both Belgium and England will be happy with the results.

Yep. but in fairness, there were three of them on the goal line for this one....

As mentioned, above, Tunisia were apparently playing Rugby:

And finally, here's Mexico celebrating the win in Berlin fan park lol

but one at the second goalpost clearly could have prevented or reduced the chance of a score, twice. In between is for the goalie to cover.

A colleague of mine was thrown out of a German snack-bar. He ordered a Mexicano :stongue:

The only downside to putting two men on the line is that you lose two markers, increasing the opponent's chance of winning the header. And they can't cover the top corners.

Good result, obviously. Was very close to being another classic England frustrating performance, with loads of half chances never quite turning into proper goal scoring opportunities. I don't think Kane is a complete player technically, but it helps enormously at this level to have someone who is ice cold in front of goal.

We've seen at this tournament already that every win is going to be hard fought. Tunisia were extremely negative, but technically they were pretty slick and they're the top ranked African team. We can seal our progress out of the group with a win against Panama now, meaning the Belgium game wouldn't even matter, and psychologically we will be so much better than if this game had finished 1-1. England do not do well when the pressure is on.

Well, round 1 is about to end like I had imagined: Mexico held Germany back, France emerged victorious, Argentina wasn't great. Brazil disappointed me, but that's probably just the bias speaking.

I know too little about Senegal to guess whether they can beat Poland, but I gave up on Japan long ago. If Colombia don't trounce them, then I'll be shocked.

And, I'm shocked. I mean, sure, they were one man down, but how the hell did Colombia lost to Japan, of all countries!?

Just saw the extended highlights of Japan Columbia - looked like a very scrappy game but props to Japan for squeezing out the win, they looked like they gave it everything.

Someone posted this on reddit and a couple of the americans commented, "whoa, I thought we were passionate about NFL and Hockey, these soccer guys go nuts".

Then someone pointed out this is the first game of the tournament for England lol.

If England actually won it, I doubt the whole of England would be sober for a month.

I’m disappointed that the US didn’t make the tourney, robs me of the opportunity to complain how poorly they’re playing.
